01 Durango 4.7 idle problems

I have a 2001 Dodge Durango 4.7l with 250,000 miles that hasn't been idling right lately. Sometimes when started and in park, it will rev up 500 or so rpm for a minute and then drop back to normal, then if I tap the gas pedal it rev back up a couple hundred rpm's for a minute again. It also does when driving at all speeds, if I tap the gas while on the road, you can feel it pull for a few seconds and then start to slow down. When I stop at a red light sometimes it will rev up when drops down to first gear and I have to put more pressure on the brake pedal to keep it from taking off. Other times it will die completely. I will have to hold my foot on the gas pedal slightly to keep it idleing. It won't die at high speeds, but when I start to slow down and below 25-30 mph it die unless I hold my foot on the gas and brake both. I have read around on this forum and seen some similar problems that people said the throttle position sensor was most likely the problem, but I just replaced it and the motor is still reving with in park. I haven't driven enough to know if it fixed the motor shutting off problem though. Also, it dosen't do it all the time and my check engine light isn't on
Thanks for any help.

Had any mechanical issues with it relating to the mileage? That's a pile of miles :jester:

Pull the TB and clean it thoroughly, specifically in the port for the IAC (below the TPS). Removing the TB is pretty self explanitory, nothing special about it.

If that doesn't do it, I'll put a couple bucks on the IAC motor itself, given that you don't have any driveability issues beyond idle. I fought a quirky idle for a while and my parts man at the dealer convinced me that they had never sold an IAC for the 4.7...I bought one later on and it fixed my problem.

My idle problem was caused by a bad throttle position sensor. It can't hurt to clean out the IAC port though either.
That's also quite common, but usually you'll also have trouble with it above idle as well.

With that mileage, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace both. You could check the TPS out with an occilloscope if you had access and knowledge of how to do so...

same as me

Mine wound up upon starts to a very high rpm....way bad for motor...cold starts are the reason a well kept motor wears out. Mine also surged. The tps was the cause. It still stuttered a bit and that was the aic. Both dealer parts. They also reprogrammed the computer..or so they say.
It drives like the day it was made.

auto zone has the IAC so it isnt a dealer part. maybe the idiot behind the counter didnt know what it was. so beings he didnt know he naturally said its a dealer only part. I got a IAC at auto zone. had to explain what it was.

I would check your vacum lines and see if any are bad.

Sounds like the IAC. First thing I would do is take it out and clean it with some carb cleaner, not sure if this can harm it, but also press in the plunger while its out and spray some cleaner in there as well. I had the same issue you are having on my 01 D but I ended up having to replace it. Then whenever you start to see the idle not be as smooth, clean it again, they seem to get dirty quite easily. I forgot where I got mine, but it wasnt the dealer, may have been NAPA.

EDIT

Doh shoulda read the last post there! I'd replace it if the idle is still funky just to be safe. If I recall it didnt cost a whole lot to replace it.

I don't like using carb/choke cleaner to clean the iac because it is an electrical part. I just use electro-motive electrical parts cleaner and if you want you could use it to clean the throttle body, brake parts and many other things.

Ok so i have a question that goes along with the original one... i picked up an 01 durango 4.7L for $1000 and it has 115xxx miles. It ran like crap throwing codes left and right. I replaced all abs sensors the cam sensor and crank sensor. I also did a tune up and changed all of the coild packs. Im still having an issue with bad idle surging but its not showing any codes. Do you think is coukd be a combo of the TPS and the IAC? I have changed the o2 sensor also but it still runs horrible. It runs and drives right now at least though.

Surging is almost always the TPS. Wouldn't hurt to clean the IAC passage either, as it's probably as neglected as the rest of the engine. JUst be very careful that you don't twist or push the IAC plunger once you take it out, or get any cleaner into the motor, because either will destroy it.
