the door keys for my pontiac and my moms buick were the round ones, and they would work for the door, trunk, and glove box. the ignition key would not go in far enough to unlock it because of the chip.
Yep my brother's Trans-Am is like this. The chip is on the physical outside of the key not inside it.

As for the OP I was thinking since your planning on going through with a 5-speed swap you should look for a truck with a 5-speed and tilt wheel to get the column out of then wait till you do your swap to toss that in.

Well, yes and no. I'm not taking a 5-speed and 318 out of a Dakota it's coming out of a Ram pickup, if it comes out of a van then the transmission will probably be out of a pickup if I can find one with a rear mounted shift tower.

I know. I'm saying then you'll have no need for a shifter on your column so a column without a shifter therefore a 5-speed Dakota would give you a clean look on the column once the swap is over. If ya catch ma drift

Wow how many times did I say Column.

I'm still looking for a 5 speed tilt column for a 2wd Dakota...I can find them all day long for a 4wd....

Good question.. :waiting:

2wd has a steering rack, 4wd has a steering box on frame...the columns are different...I know..I had a tilt from a 4wd here from a 93 I parted out...was completely different

Bryan
Well no shit you don't say? Can a 4x4 tilt be retrofitted somehow then?

Later generations have R&P on both 2wd and 4wd.. I was thinking along those lines that it was a box vs a R&P, but that should be the same column until it comes through the firewall though, no? Isn't it just a different collapsible joint?

the entire column is different that comes through the firewall....connects a different way and at a different spot.....

If I could have made the 4wd tilt column work in my 94 2wd.....I would not still be looking for one now

Wish I would of know you were looking I saw one in the junkyard about 3 months ago. I'll keep an eye out for you next time I'm there

Regarding my ignition that was replaced in the past, most people have an accessory position on their vehicles and it turns in the opposite direction as starting. My truck does not; only turns in one direction, and has 3 positions. First unlocks the steering lock, second does absolutely nothing, third is my running position. Do you think I have a dead accessory position (second)?

With older GMs, the round key is for the doors, trunk, and glove box. The square key is for the igntion only.

did you push the key & lock in towards the column and then try and turn it backwards to accessory position?

that's how I have to get to accessory on my Dakota & the little Shadow
