Remove the tray from the center console (its held in with 4 screws). There is a linkage under it that connects the vent control to the vent.

I think he means the front.

There's a door in the airbox that switches air between defrost and floor (I assume defrost works, right?). Either that door is jammed or the motor that moves it is burned out.
If defrost doesn't work, then it's the door that selects between panel and floor/defrost that is jammed or has a bad motor.

Nope, 00 was the last year they used the vacuum actuators. Starting with 01, they use electronic servo motors to move all the doors.

Yeah you have a 01 then all servo/actuator driven, I no kidding just got mine put back together today it was a cam unit that failed a extruded piece from the housing (a nipple) that this swivel connects to broke off wouldn't allow the transfer of air flow selection to happen.

This is connected to the large wheel the controls all the movement of the of the defroster rod which extends up from the wheel and the short cam piece that controls floor to vent. This is the piece that was causing me problems the can unit was fine just the nipple on the housing broke I fixed by using a longer screw that went all the way into the housing.

I thought it was a "blend mode door issue" so I tore my entire dash down all of it, I find out I didn't need to lol uggg. I can post some pics of the broken piece to replace would have been the lower housing pretty expensive.

I redid both blend doors in the rear as well both were broke and I purchased a new housing for the rear which I still have as i just used a couple parts off it so I have to fully working actuators/servos if anyone needs a part and a entire rear housing.
The servos are common all the same front and rear.

I would love to see some photos. I am getting ready to replace my heater core in my 01 Dakota, and lately any photos of dash tear downs is like porn, to me :D

Couple more and all Ive got I didnt do my usual job of photo documentation.

Hope it helps a lil.

Awesome, thank you man! So Did you just swing the dash back enough to remove the HVAC unit or completely remove the dash from the vehicle?

Did you find most of the replacement parts at the dealer or online?

Thanks again for the photos!!

I tore the whole damn thing down but I didnt have to remove the hvac housing in my case !! I found my parts at Hinkley dodge in Salt Lake City, Moparwholesale online, Factorychryslerparts.com To see what I need to it was a task but not horrible to tare it all down I went layer by layer lol ,
Zip lock bags and a marker for nuts blots and screws labeling

Well I know this is old, but does anyone have a specific part number for the defrost door linkage?

My defroster always blows when my heat or a/c is on, so I think the linkage is broken (based on reading from others).

Where Im pointing with the flat blade is where my problem location was .
This is for AlphaDog. Thanks a lot...as I'm ready to tear my 02 down...but don't want to. I'm almost positive that my problems are on the left end above the gas pedal as you have indicated with your little screw driver. I don't know where to begin...take out seat? remove steering wheel? etc...can you contact me at 7 0 6 8 2 5 7 1 8 0 my ph? Tks Or e-mail me at gandl2123@gmail.com? Tks Mr. Tripp

Ironic that after reading this a few days ago my blower started only working on high. I had to install a new "blower motor control module" which I got at rockauto for like $3.50.

I guess I need to tear into my dash now to see why my defrost door is stuck open. I still cant find the arm online, anyone have the part number for it?

I'm also wondering about the part number for the linkage. I'm wondering if it's available separately? Also, can somebody tell me how the linkage connects to the defrost door? I need to remove it and don't want to break the door.
