Any shop that has an actual DRB3/StarScan or the Snap-On equivalent can read the TCM codes.

The rpm bounce while cruising is actually usually a symptom of a bad TPS, which may or may not throw a code.. The TCM detects a (phantom) change in the throttle angle and unlocks the torque converter - which causes the bounce.

Mine has an intermittent bad crank sensor that I haven't got around to replacing, and every once in a while it'll kick out and start bouncing off the limpy rev limiter.. Once when that happened I did also get the P0700, but that came alongside a P0320, and once it went away it never came back..

Does yours ever surge at idle or try to take off on its own at stop signs?

I suggest you pull the codes first.. Find out what the TCM is complaining about before you throw any money at it. I still lean towards the TPS being bad over a problem with the actual lockup system. I'd say go to a chain store like Autozone or O'reilly and buy a TPS, install it carefully - don't mark it up or get grease on it, and give it a shot.. If it's not the cause, return it.

Either they don't have a DRB3, or they are trying to screw more money out of you. If the TCM is dead or just not communicating with the PCM, that would throw a separate code (I forget what it is off the top of my head) and your PRND21 would have boxes around every gear. I learned that little ditty while installing my remote start and none of the wiring diagrams showed the TCM power wire in the ignition switch..

They cost thousands of dollars, so I doubt a lot of people have them in their personal garages.. I would just call around to local shops (not trans shops) and ask if they have one. It'll probably cost you $50 or so. A dealer can do it too but they charge a full labor hour to hook it up, even though it only takes a few minutes.

For the record you have 45rfe was from 2000-2002 on the durango and the 545rfe wasn't in durangos until 2003+ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_RFE_transmission.
Keep and eye on it maybe it needs a new solenoid pack in the valve body. I know with my trans it has a O/D lock up switch.

Here is a great write-up on your trans and tells you how to test the solenoid pack which is a common problem it says http://etereman.com/blog/fiat-trans...nsmission/three-problems-with-the-dodge-45fre-transmission-that-are-easy-to-fix

Just test it when you are doing the filter/gasket.
The only difference between the 45RFE and 545RFE is the programming in the TCM. The transmissions themselves are identical.

Good to know, i thought it was identical except they added another set of overdrive clutches. You know i don't really know shit about 4.7s :)
It's a three planetary trans, so it's theoretically capable of eight forward (three OD) and two reverse gears. They don't use them all because some are very close to the same ratio.
