For my whole driving life I've lived near Pittsburgh PA, the snow here is not too bad and usually off the roads within 24 hours. Now that I am going to school in northwestern PA I am driving on snowy roads way more often. If the road is snowy enough I'll use 4HI, but what is the safest top speed? I've heard 50-55 is safe but I rarely will use it (4x4) above 40.

I will have to consult my owners manual tomorrow to give you the correct answer, because IDK off the top of my head.
That said, as long as you are not doing any low speed turning, then the speed may not matter but that only applies to the AWD transfer cases and AWD in general.

Lol.
Safe top speed with in 4wd is the same as 2wd.
Drive according to the road conditions.

If you worried about blowing up your truck just because you locked it in 4 Hi then stop worrying.
You won't.

I've owned many 4x4's over the last 30yrs and dad had them the 15yrs before that. I regularly drive 60-80mph in 4 Hi.
Depending on road conditions.

But here at 5am going to work is clear roads and maybe see four vehicles in the first twenty miles. So book it.

Ditto.:woot:

Must be a Canadian thing.:funny:

Not much point in having it if you are afraid to use it.

You can shift in and out of 4hi up to 25mph. (for tcase shifters on the floor) As far as top speed in 4hi, I've seen 70mph with it before. I don't recommend it for the street though.
false.

I regularly shift into 4hi in the winter at 90-100km/h. (55mph for you Americans.) Where I live I commute 24 km each way to work in the snowy mountains. (there is currently 3 feet of snow on my front lawn) the only reason you EVER have to limit the speed you are switching into 4wd is if it is low range, or your back tires are spinning.

i got up to top speed in my durango in 4hi before.......what is that like 110-115mph? was it safe to be driving like that? HELL NO! but it didn't hurt my durango any.....

Exactly. Speed doesn't matter.

haha thank god a few people in this thread know how to drive! :drive:

You can't shift into 4Lo at ANY speed. You can't even do it with the trans in gear. You can only shift into 4Lo while stopped with the trans in park or neutral or else you'll grind gears.

2H to 4H or 4H to 2H
Shifts between 2H and 4H can be done with the vehicle stopped or in motion. With vehicle in motion, the transfer case will engage/disengage faster if you momentarily release the accelerator pedal after making the shift.

4H to 4L or 4L to 4H
Shifting can be performed with the vehicle rolling 2-3 mph (3-5 km/h) or completely stopped. Slow the vehicle to under 3mph, shift automatic transmission to NEUTRAL (N) or depress clutch on manual transmission. Shift transfer case lever without hesitation to the desired mode. Pausing in transfer case NEUTRAL (N) may require shutting the engine off to avoid gear clash while completing the shift. Do not attempt to shift to or from 4L with the transmission in gear.

Wow. Can you ever see a circumstance where at two mph you HAVE to shift into low and you just don't have time to stop?

OMG!! THE BORG ARE HERE!! THEY'LL ASSIMILATE US!! QUICK, JAM IT INTO LOW RANGE WHILE WERE MOVING SCOTTY.

I HAVE TO PUT THE THRUST DRIVER INTO NEUTRAL AND SHUT DOWN THE WARP CORE CAPTAIN. BUT I THINK IT CAN BE DONE WITHOUT KILLING US ALL.
ITS CRAZY AND ENOUGH TO WORK.
