my dad has a 2002 dodge ram 1500 4.7. his truck has been running rough and has code saying multiple misfire but dosent tell me which cylinders. it still ran but today he was driving down the road and it just died on him. no sound, or anything out of the ordinary. just died. tried to start it up and it just cranks but does not start. ive changed the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor. all 8 coil packs are fairly new. so are the plugs. ive got spark and i can smell fuel. fuel pump runs too. im not sure of the pressure b/c i dont have a guage. ive checked some fuses for the ignition sys. no luck. trucks got 150,000 miles on it. help me out please.

How long did you crank it after you changed the cam sensor?

I just did mine this morning for the second time and I had almost given up both times thinking it wasn't the cam sensor cause I had to crank it so much after I changed it.

But both times it eventually started chugging a bit and then started running

I don't know how the 4.7's will work but that's my experience with my 5.9

it turns over and surges faster and slower. its trying to start but dosent.

Has it been doing that for some time? With mine...once it starts chugging but still not starting it took another couple minutes or periodic cranking to get it to start.

Crank it a little and then pull a plug and see if it's got gas on it.....if it does and your getting spark then it's gotta be a timing issue

could also be a coil gone bad, being new they can still gone bad preventing from cranking, happened to me as wellmine just went out, went to slauto zone got a new one same thing, come to find it was a bad coil as well being brand new.went ahead took the advice of others and changed it again, boom fired right up.

but even if it was a bad coil pack, it still would start. its gotta be timing. anything elese i missed, something else i can check?? thanks for the input

if those motors are anything like the 4.6 fords, then it cant really be a timing problem unless the cam chain needs to be replaced because the timing is controled by them. do these trucks have a distributor? the fords do not, so no way to really have a timing problem because it was all electronic.

no distributor. coil on plug. i have spark and fuel. the computer might be messed up. im trying to get a pressure gauge to check compression, b/c i think the head gasket is blown. its been loosing coolant for a while and we put the stop leak in there and i seemed to work alittle. is there any other senors that would keep an engine from running?? thanks for your help.

The cam and crank sensors help control the timing....a problem with either of them and there's a good chance the truck won't run

it turns over but does not start. ive held it on for like 20 sec. its not going to start. i dont get it. theres no other sensor that could shut down an engine like this is there?? i dont think the chain broke b/c as stated above there was no sound. it just died. i still got to get a pressure gauge and check the compression. is it possible that if a valve is stuck open, it would not start?? one of the rockers is loose i think b/c ive heard a tapping noise. thanks again for the help.

also check the auto shut down relay, just for shits and giggles swap it out with one of the other ones under there and see if it works or not. prolly not it but its worth a crack at it.

The ASD Worked!!! only thing is that i think the rocker arm is off. it sounded terrible and i shut it down quick. gotta take off the valve cover and torque it down now. Thanks for the help!!

alright. i need to get the valve cover off and tighten down the rocker. how hard is it to do this on a 4.7?? its got the cam on top of the rockers and ive never done that before. can you tighten the rockers down without taking off the cam?? can anyone help me out. thanks
