when the 2ed band is "loose" it comes off quicker allowing a flare before the 3rd clutches engage- the worn 3rd clutches also delay the 3rd engagement but that is not easily adjustable.
so do the adjust the band drill to put the rebuild on your timetable
a reprogramming/ shift kit will help if the clutches are not too worn
remember that the number of clutches/ clutch material/ fluid all work together and the band material/ lever ratio and fluid work together
This requires a slightly different calibration if any of these items are changed.
materials and fluid have changed greatly over the years.
Some OEM materials are no longer available in the aftermarket
Work with known combinations
Was not the Type "A" fluid sperm whale oil based?
That said the Torqueflyte can be made to work on any fluid from Type F to Motor Oil.
With a converter clutch though stick with ATF+4
turns out my transmission cable linkage was not set properly. My mechanic said it was his fault. He fixed it for me, no charge obviously. Truck shifts fine now...actually better. glad i dont have to replace/rebuild the tranny.
Great news
and checking the tranny fluid in park (without the Transgo shift valve) covers up really low fluid- which gives all kinds of false symptoms
