So I have a NX kit on my 99 R/T. I installed this kit last May along with Autolite 9322, Taylor 8mm wires, Accel coil, Accel cap, and Accel rotor. I have run the 100 shot on the truck about 4 or 5 times on the street and on the dyno.

Now, the truck has remained fairly idle for the last 8 months with the last nitrous being used in late Aug. I had had no issues with the setup and was running 93 octane fuel when used. I took the truck to the track last weekend, and after dialing it in on motor I decided to break out the 100 shot.

I left the line at 2500 rpm, began to spray and .....pop pop pop..nitrous detonation. The check engine light blinked until the end of the track in which the motor was making about half power. I took it back to the pits and checked everything out. I checked both selenoids, jets, fittings, there was no leaks, no smoke, no engine noise. I then ran the truck on motor and it ran as strong as it did before the attempted juice run. I then tried once more to leave with the juice...got detonation and immediately shut it down. Once again, the truck was running fine.

I got it home and pulled three plugs, finding only a thin film of what looks like rust. I was using 93 octane with a bottle of Lucas Oil octane booster and the plugs installed last May.

Does anyone have any suggestions, help, or advice to give? Sorry about the lengthy post.

Did you check to make SURE you're getting fuel when you spray? Pop the fuel line off, shut off the bottle and try spraying. See if you get fuel. That's the only thing I can think of.

I gues I'm not 100% sure. I pulled the intake tube off and looked at the throttle body....nothing showed any signs of carbon or damage. The fuel selenoid was working. I pulled the shark nozzle out and was def. getting fuel. Could it be an issue with the plugs or octane booster? It was puffing out dark gray/black smoke out the pipes as it popped.

Well not for nuthin, but somthing similar to that happened to me. My buddy was driving my truck and thought he opened the bottle but he closed it. Everytime he tried to get on it, the truck bogged down real bad. It was just dumpin a shit load of fuel in and couldn't burn it. Double check your jets and make sure your juice is comming out.

I had juice coming out.... I cracked the line and purged it by hand.

I've tried the Lucas Oil Products Octane Booster Last Summer for a Dyno Run with 94 Octane Pump Fuel from Sunoco........

Got the same result with Nitrous too.....

do you still have the 8 month old fuel in the tank?

Gas can go bad in 3 months from sitting, it still burns, but the Octane level isn't as High.

I try to run 100 Octane Unleaded when I spray mine, only time it works properly......

The fuel was fresh. So you got the detonation, with the lucas oil octane booster? Did it do any damage to your internals?

Luckily No Damage was done, I canceled the Dyno Test after we detected the problem.........

I then filled up with 94 Octane for the trip home to delute the fuel further..

I have a idea of why it happened, but I doubt anyone would believe it...

I'm Not impressed with the Lucas Octane Booster, I think it increases the gravity weight of the Fuel too much and prevents it from mixing with the Nitrous properly.

I've never had luck with Octane Boosters..

on a side Note, a week after this happened I found a Badly Corroded Dist Cap and Rotor on my 3.9 that may have contributed to the problem..

I swapped them out for a New Echlin Brass Cap and Rotor from NAPA...

I haven't Dyno Tested again to see if that fixed it or not..

i run a 100 shot and never saw a problem ,that hasnt ever happened to me...

the only time something close to that happened when i was re-tourquing my rocker arms. put everyhting back together, put th jets back in the shark nozzle and went out on the expressway. gave her the hammer to see how she felt, then decided to throw the button. bop bop bop.... dies.. i was liek what the fuck i prolly just fucked my truck.. one more time... bop bop bop dead... watched my wideband the second time and it read rich of the scale, way too much fuel. pulled over in a parking lot, what do you know i switched the jets on accident, i had the bigger opening on the fuel line and the smaller opening on the nitrous side, so i pretty much drowned it in fuel till it died. flipped them around quick and held the button through 1st and 2nd and she loved it, thne put some new plugs in th enext night and she was good as new, takes the 100 shot all day long. check out your jets, maybe same thing happened ot you

I doubled checked the jets just to make sure, and I've got them right. I'm hoping it was just a bad combination of shitty octane booster and some older plugs. I'm gonna swap the plugs tomorrow and run the bitch damn near out of fuel. Then I'll add some premium pump gas, step down to the 50 shot and see where I'm at I guess. I'm thinking it was the damn octane booster though.

a 100 HP Shot usually needs about a 2 degree Timing Retard, a stepping it down to a 50 HP Shot should be ok on the stock Timing setting with premium
pump gas......

some guys use a gallon of Toulene or Xylene in the tank, it's the key Component in most Octane boosters, except your adding more of it at a cheaper price.... it'll bump the Octane level by 15-20 points!

or raise you Ocatne from say 94 to say 95.5 or 96, improves the throttle response too!

take it to the dyno. get a a/f reading on the motor, and go from there, work ur way up threw the jets. Is the nitrous old? for a 100 shot imo u shouldent need to pull any timming. I only pull 2 degreese on the v6 when sprayin a 125 on 93 octain with some unleaded 102 prob comes out to be around the 97 98 area

Nitrous doesn't have a shelf life.
Are you sure that the jets are the right ones for your truck?
