So after my fuel tank dilemma (if i even get it fixed soon) i started looking into fuel cells.

A few questions though

I want to mount it in my bed so does anybody have any experience with them in there? I've seen a few but not to sure. I don't have a tonneau (spelling?) cover but could get one if that seems necessary.

Also I was looking at ones from RCI because they're cheaper and was only looking at metal ones but found one that was plastic for a hell of a lot cheaper, so is that a good or bad idea?

I've seen people using an a1000 aeromotive pumps which look unnessecary for my lack of a modified engine, is that true? What pump would you recommend?

Lastly what else would i need to do this, besides the obvious lines and fittings and a fuel filter but i don't really know what things i really need of those. Would any of the kits that jegs sells be a good idea?

Is there any problem with filling up the tank too? Like do i have to check to see if its gonna overfill or does the pump stop automatically still?

Do you need to get emission checks?

STAY AWAY FROM RCI..................

as far as the emissions, it depends on where you live. When i still had a test every year they just passed it as they didn't have an adapter for the tank to test it. other places will refuse to pass it and one actually told me to hose clamp on the rubber filler line with stock gas cap and they would pass it. I would ask around in your area.

Wait a second...so with a fuel cell I would have a problem getting an inspection in NYC? My guy NEVER looks under my truck, just plugs it in and passes.

Whats wrong with RCI? Its just a fuel tank not much they can mess up, id be getting the rest of the stuff from a different company... And yeah i think i might stop at my toyota place in town they do emissions and ask them.

Yeah i didn't think they looked under my truck either but I'm not sure, the problem could be that my gas cap would be in the bed of my truck?

Actually, I know for a fact they don't look under my truck. He's a friend of mine, just plugs it in and that's it. Doesn't look for a fuel door or anything. Plus, what is the difference between having the fuel door behind he tailgate and having a 70s Camaro or Corvette with the fuel door behind he plate or on top of the car on the back. It's pretty much the same exact location, plus I would still keep the evap system so there's no engine light.

The difference between the 70's camaro and your Dakota is yours didn't come with this from the factory. I don't know about NY, but that little fact makes ALL the difference here in VA. Where you live makes a big difference and who you know makes the biggest difference of all

Not much they can mess up, yes your completely right. BUT, they found a way :jester: this brand is VERY prone to the welds cracking and leaking gas. Not really a design flaw i would want in my fuel tank (reason why i got rid of mine).

Here is a pic of a buddy's tank

If you want to waist your money by all means, don't listen to some on that has had one and had a coke can worth of gas leak out in 10 min 3hrs from home

Do your self a favor and get one custom built like i did of go with a different brand. You get what you pay for.

As far as the inspection they are suppose to look underneath, at least in VA. The reason its normally a problem with emissions since they are suppose to hook up the gas cap (or fuel tank, cant remember which one) to test for pressure leaks (again at least in VA), and most places don't have the popper adapter for a fuel cell.

Might be a long shot but it could be since he is YOUR GUY, he might act differently if john smith brings in his civic

Alright so besides the relocation of the gas tank, and don't worry I'll take your advice on RCI, but if they don't care about relocation I can do this as long as i hook up all the emissions things?

How are you going to hook up al the EVAP crap on a fuel cell?

No one to my knowledge has done it, so you're pretty much gonna have to figure it out on your own.

I have..........
its VERY easy. just hook up the vent line on the tank to the charcoal canister. You need a spring type roll over valve, the ball type will let to much fuel into the line when the tank is full and your going in a turn. I have the stock vent molded to my fuel tank but i am going to switch over to a jeep style or a threaded type from the manufacture of my tank. I did a rush job, but i am going to redo it once i redo my 4link this weekend to an adjustable style.

not since i have gone to an external pump.

Here is a pic of my first set up with a molded stock pump. the red/blue 90 deg AN fitting is hooked up to the vent on the tank and goes to the port on the charcoal canister that the vent from the stock tank goes to.

I have since gotten rid of the RCI a few years ago and got a custom tank (when i went to a static drop) made for not much more than the RCI. I am in the process of getting rid of the molded stock vent and should have my new vents done this weekend.

No you can do it with a external pump also. I just had some major problems with fuel slosh so I designed my new tank with a sump and baffles. I just prefer the external pump over the internal pump thats all. My truck was back-halfed with thick wall box tubing

Yeah I wanna do an external pump with my full evap system for emissions but have the tank in the bed, so all this is possible? I guess I'll have to start looking into everything more and find some people with that going on.

Nice truck man
