recently i cracked my side mirror(not sure now), and now when i turn on the defogger it doesn't work. what could be wrong?

You broke the element also which causes current to not flow through. Which means mirror will not work.
I haven't checked in a long while so things may have changed but the cheap way out was to take it to a glass shop and they would cut a new piece of mirror and install in your housing. If the defog doesn't work now, I wouldn't expect it to work with a new glass (mirror) installed. Usually the shop installed replacement glass was a so-so fit.
