i want to put a cam into my 4.7 but dont kno which one to get. it is stock engine w/ straight pipes. i want it to lope real hard. someone i kno suggested a 272 cam but i wanted to ask some opinions on here first. thanks for any suggestions/info.

:Dumm... thats 2 cams... not just one.

Right. Single overhead cam does not mean it only has one cam...simply that there is once cam per bank of cylinders and that it is above the valves instead of in the block.

I don't mean to sound like an ass, but it seems you need to do some more reading on this engine and what's available before jumping headlong into engine mods.

first off you want a real hard lope -- sorry to break it to you, but that's for OHV engines. You can get really hard lope out of your SOHC engine, but not without A LOT of money. There just isn't the aftermarket support available to make those engines run correctly with hard lope -- atleast from Mopar.

Just an example -- my buddy has an '02 GT Mustang 4.6 SOHC, he put 224 cams with .530 lift in them. Sounded nice, don't get me wrong, but it didn't have much lope to it. My other buddy who owns a 5.9L OHV engine, put a similar 224 with only .510 cam in his motor, has a pretty nice amount of lope.

I'm not even going to get into specifics as to why that is, all you need to know is that you're going to have to do A LOT of modification to that engine before you can get anything remotely close the kind of lope you want.

I'll let someone else with a 4.7L speak for me, I haven't had the pleasure of dealing with that engine or that PCM for that fact (which I'm sure is a nightmare in itself), but I will tell you, because of the characteristics of a SOHC engine, you're not going to be able to get the lope you want w/o some serious money invested -- a simple change of cams isn't gonna do it for you.

I think pretty much anybody would assume you meant one cam, we were just making sure that you knew the 4.7 has 2. There are a lot of people around who know pretty much nothing about engines(not meaning anybody particular).

Welcome to the site and there are some guys on here with a shitload of knowledge on the 4.7's. They will chime in sooner or later

aight thanks man. i appreciate you not bein a jerk about it.

hey bud, don't worry about shit. Everyone has to start somewhere. Hell when I was 16 I didn't know the difference between a crankshaft and a camshaft. No worries bro. I wasn't gonna get into the specifics because I'm not sure if I even understand them well enough to explain them. Either way man, just go with whatever direction you want -- just know that you will spend a lot of money to get it to run right and run strong. Other than that, just enjoy owning and driving a Dakota, they're a fun truck.

hey bro, wans tryin to be a jerk either. :banana2:

as for mods to the 4.7:

a cold air setup
(bout the cheapest around)
not really much out there that is have seen for the lil 4.7.

after a while and save some $$$$

bigger TB (F&B is a nice piece but $$$) 70mm
set of MOPAR HO cams or KRC 212`s...
send the ECM off for a custom flash
turbo set up

the 4.7 wasnt setup (or marketed) as a go-fast motor. thus not many aftermarket parts out there. it is possible to get performance out of it, but takes trainloads of cash.
