Adding a transmission cooler to my 5.9 R/T

I've done some searching and found a few outdated posts, but I'd like some up to date info.
I would like to add a transmission cooler to my 00 Durango 5.9R/T.
I want to add the factory components, they fit best and install with the least amount of B.S.
Does anyone have the part numbers for the lines and cooler? Does the factory cooler have the bracket installed? If not, what is the numbers for the bracket?

Lastly is there someone here on the board that sells the components, so I can support the board and their sponsors.

Thanks!

You would be better off getting an aftermarket one. There are several with fans installed that do a much better job. Installation is basically the same, and will still be much cheaper than the dealer one.

I wouldnt mind an aftermarket cooler itself, but i definately want the factory lines that connect to it. For what the lines probbily cost, it isnt worth cutting up the stock metal lines.

My R/T didnt come with the towing package. I have no extra cooler between the radiator and a/c condensor.

We've been towing about 5000lbs with it so far, and the AT Temp light hasnt come on yet.
But rather be safe than sorry

You'd better watch it. If memory serves, tow capacity on the RT was 2,000 lbs due to the lowered suspension and reduced travel. I want to say Dodge replaced a couple axles initially before they updated the towing capacity.

I am not too familiar with the GenIII trucks, but on my GenII there are steel lines coming off the tranny, then rubber lines going to the radiator. Rubber lines then go out to the tranny cooler, and back to the return steel line. Just get a coupler, some pipe clamps and fresh line to run to the cooler. No steel cutting involved. I would think yours is similar.

He has a durango, the suspension is normal. Even if he had the truck, it would just bottom out on the bumb stops from rime to time.

My bad, I was stuck in Dakota RT mode. Oops!

RT towing

I remember when I was first shopping a few years ago, on my dealer's lot there was a gorgeous black Dakota RT that was a Chrysler buy-back because they changed the tow rating after the original sale to something significantly lower than what it was when the first owner originally bought it new. It actually specifically said that on the window sticker. Beautiful truck, the only thing wrong with it was the owner bought it expecting a specific tow rating and then got Chrysler to buy it back when they lowered it. Had I had any sense I would have snatched that up instead of buying my brand new 4x4 and watching the value plummet. I can't remember the year or the price but knowing what I know now I kick myself for not taking it.

your best bet it to get one from the dealer. ask for a v-10 tow truck trans cooler. i did that for my dodge ram 1500. rit right in between the a/c condensor, and the radiator. fit beautifully. worked like a charm too.

i feel the same way about the time i let an amber fire mist 2000 club cab dakota slipp throygh my fingers. i was going to trade in my ram for one. i woulda had to finace like 8k over 5 years...lol man, why didnt i do it? i had o order the truck too, cause they didnt have one that color ANYWHERE! thats how rare that color is. if i did get it, i know id have a paxton on it by now, trans done the way mine is now, 4.10 gears, tonneau, slide a link bars, or maybe even a 4 link. stroker kit too maybe..ive run out of leg, im kicking my self so bad over that.. :buttkick:

I wanted to put the stock tranny cooler setup on my 4.7L Dakota a few years ago. I forget the exact number but i went to the dealer pricing out the correct parts, It was horribly expensive. I did a custom install that looks damn good if i do say so myself :) I got the biggest tranny cooler autozone had. I only had to cut the return line. In total i think i used 4 inches of rubber hose. I bent hard lines to plumb the entire thing. Driving on the beach and towing my moving trailer 200 miles, did not overheat once

I usually get a aftermarket tranny cooler on all my trucks. the dakota is the only one that came with a cooler from the factory. I only used B&M coolers. they have a cooler that is basically a small radiator. Best I ever used. the others are nothing but a part stolen off a fridge. a tube with fins welded on it. POS IMO

My '99 Durango is driven on the beach in 4wd regularly, and needed a transmission cooler. Compared to the factory cooler, the aftermarket one is bigger, as well as cheaper. So it was an obvious choice for me.

Now we don't have to worry about heating up the tranny when towing out those Silverados and F350's when they get stuck in the sand.

I installed an 15x9x3/4 in. aftermarket tranny cooler AND remote filter on the durango this fall from summit. I think it came to be about 90 bucks.

THe trans cooler itself simply straps onto the front of your radiator. You can order different sizes and configurations depending on your needs. The best spot I found for the remote filter is mounted to the battery tray support.

It took a few hours under the truck getting it all hooked up nice, but I must say it is an improvement for sure.

I had a 75 Dodge Charger (Cordoba look alike) that I transplanted a 383 and the 727 tranny out of a totaled 70 Challenger. The tranny had a shift kit and a big stall converter on it (don`t remember the stall rpm now). The tranny cooler was destroyed in the crash along with the rad and the rest of the front of the car. When I put it in mine I used the condenser out of a window air conditioner. It worked great, I never had a leak or overheat and because of the extra tubes it held more fluid as a bonus.
