1999 Durango Trans/Shifter problem

I have read through 1,000,000 different transmission posts and cannot find anyone with my exact symptoms. Here is my situation:

1999 Durango 4x4 - 5.9L - Automatic trans

Problem started with the transmission really wanting to "hold" 1st gear during acceleration (hard or soft acceleration). Eventually it would shift with enough backing off and getting back on the thottle. Now, the shift lever on the column is not working properly as well and the "holding" of first gear has gotten worse. Putting the level in park does not fully engage into that position. You have to take your left hand and apply counter-clockwise pressure to the shift lever (driving it farther into park) and take your right hand to turn and remove the key. The truck will not start in the park position either. I have to apply pressure to the shifter, turn the key to on, shift the lever to neutral, then start the truck. The indicated positions on the dash seem to be a little "off" as well when selecting the other gears as well. At times, the only way that i can get the truck to shift out first gear is to either grab the shifter and manually take it all the way down to 1st then back up to drive, or shift in and out of drive and neutral a couple of times and it will eventually shift. Taking the shift lever down to 1st and then resetting to drive seems to help the problem for the next few subsequent accelerations some of the time. I have taken the front and bottom panels off of my dashboard to look around at some of the shifter mechanism, but i am not sure what to look for right now.

I know this sounds like a wierd problem, but this is the best way that I can describe its symptoms. I have recently changed my water pump, flushed the coolant system, and changed my spark plug wires. This forum was very helpful in some of my troubled moments with the water pump. I hope that someone can have some insight into my tranny probelms as well.

Thanks!

Well the first problem with your shift indicator not showing the correct position and not starting in park can be easily adjusted by turning the little white adjuster just below your steering column under the dash. This may help out with the hesitation to shift some. It did with mine. I have a 46re trany which you probably have the same. You may wanna try adjusting your Tv cable also but it sounds like you are having the same problem as me(hesitating to shift from 1-2, Hitting the rev limiter at WOT, and not kicking down and catching the lower gear when you step on it while moving) and I need my Transmission rebuilt from what I have gathered and been told. :sorry: Sorry for the bad news but I'm in the same boat, so your not alone ! I went a Dodge Stealership here in NE Florida and they quoted me $2,850.00 for a rebuild but I have a aquantance from another Ford web board that is a ASE certified Master Tech in Kingsland,GA and he has another friend that he recommended to me to call and tell him that he sent me. I call this Guy "Marty" up and he quoted me $1000-1200 to rebuild it. If you want I can check with him to see if it is ok for you to call him. He is located about 45 minutes North of Kingsland,GA. I see your in Georgia but I'm not familiar with that area. Hope this helps ya out !

Sounds like you have a couple of things going on, but the holding in gear i've had the same problem. First it started holding in 2nd, and i had to lift to shift, took it to a shop, and they adjusted the TV cable which helped, but the problem progressed to holding in 1st, and then to point it wouldn't shift at all.

Needed a complete rebuild with many new hard parts, had them install a shift kit, and mobil1 synthetic while they were at...all for $2808.96 with a 36,000 mi warranty.

Good luck i feel for ya.
