Just wondering if anyone has done this or might know if it will work...

I'm looking to change the gauge cluster w/large gas gauge for the one with the tach w/small gas gauge... it's a 1998 Standard Dakota.

Anyone have any idea?

Im concerned that if you try this the Tach wont work. Usually when a vehical dont have a tach from the factory theres a reason why. When I told to swap circuitry, this wont help you here because well the boards are totally different. You might be totally screwed over on this one. If you want me to, I can get you a cluster out of a 97 dodge ram, shouldnt cost me any more then $15 to get it I just need to know.

thanks man but i think you're probably right... was just something that has been begging me to change it for a while now (damn you huge gas gauge!)

but i guess ill just stick with it..

this may not be relevant to your dakota but my '91 dak came with the big gas gauge in place of the tach. got a cluster from a truck w/ tach. plugged it all in and it worked just fine with no modification the cluster had some extra plugin chip on it for running the tach. and such but it was all wired in the factory harness the tac.h must just have been optional or came with certain packages. imo it makes no sense for them to make multiple wire harnesses they can simply terminate unused wires and saves money to make only one harness for all

yes you can change the cluster out for one with a tach, all the "wiring" is all there and you wont have to modify anything. However there are a couple of things you need to be concerned with. #1 being you need to get one from the same year as your truck and if yours is an auto you should get one from and auto, the same goes for if you have a manual, try to get one from a manual. There are some minor discrepancies from the factory to where that stuff matters some times for some years. So much so that you may even have to find one with the same motor and similar options as yours (doubt it though). You also may be able to get one from a 99, but im not sure on that its just what i have heard.
#2 whatever the mileage that is on the truck that you take the gauge cluster from, is going to be what is displayed when you plug it into your truck. It is saved in the cluster

Hate to resurrect an old post but I've searched and found nothing so here goes. I have a 03 Dakota with a four gauge display (temp, fuel, tach, mph) and would like to upgrade to a six gauge display (fuel, temp, oil pres, volt, teach and, mph). Is this a "plug and play" upgrade or is there more involved? I've owned several Jeep XJ's over the years and its always been a swap item. I'm not that up to date with the Dakota as of yet so any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
