no no, I'd be installing this all myself. The shop quote was if they did it all. And they'd just be turning the rotors and changing the pads.

I figure for a little bit more money, my dad and I can do the labor on it, and I can have some nice performance brakes. I'd go with OE style for the money savings, but I've read they are highly prone to warping and brake fade.

I can get powerstop drilled/slotted rotors at summit racing for $150 shipped, I can get EBC Ultimax pads for $53 at autoanything.com. That's ~$200, only $30 more than what the shop quoted, and the brakes should be better and more importantly, the rotors should last longer

well if your doin it yourself, that $170 shop bill just got knocked down to $70, with ceramic pads and turnin rotors at $10 each. i personally would never spend the money on "performance" rotors. i dont tow anything and i dont drive my truck like its a viper :jester: just my .02.

well yeah, I'm aware of that. The main reason why I'm looking at sport rotors is for the sake of longevity though. As I said earlier, I could get brand new OE rotors with a set of brake pads for $90 shipped. I don't want to have the OE rotors warp on me again in a year though.

for the price, you can turn OE rotors 3 or 4 times before they equal the cost of "performance" rotors. i turn my stock rotors once every 9 or 10 months weather they need it or not. and someone correct me if im wrong, but i dont think you can turn drilled/slotted rotors. once theyre fucked, they're fucked and your dumpin another $100 on new ones.

are these 'different lathes' rather uncommon? BTW, what do you think of the powerstop drilled and slotted rotors? They have really good reviews on autoanything.com

Any rotor that is drilled is a big no no on our trucks IMO. Our brakes are already barely big enough as it is and to weaken the rotors by cross drilling makes it worse. As i said before, ANY drilled rotor WILL crack evbentually. It's only a matter of time.

And the "special" brake lathes aren't uncommon as more and more people are using slotted/drilled performance rotors. They are just more expensive.

Cool, I guess I'll stick with the dimpled and slotted designs. Now I just need to decide if I want dimpled and slotted, or just slotted. hmm

You can turn slotted/drilled rotors, just not on your standard brake lathes. Requires a different type of brake lathe to do it.
That's total BS!!!! I've turned slotted and drilled rotors on a brake lathe that was older than you are and there was absolutely nothing 'special' about it!

Hmm, well that would be good news then. By the way, you have any opinion on rotors?

I've had the NAPA drilled and slotted rotors on my RT for over 5 years and they have never had to be turned or trued up and absolutely on cracking. Also have the NAPA drilled and slotted rotors on Martha's GC, front and back, for almost 4 years and have never had any problems.

I also have the NAPA ceramic pads on both vehicles from the day the rotors were installed and have never had to change them.

haha, you guys don't pull any punches here do you?

Brian will try to impress you with his so called 'knowledge' but 99% of the time he's just repeating what he's heard somewhere else. A mountain of mis-information. :jester:
And I'm sure you learned everything you ever knew from first hand experience. Shoot, you probably skipped school all together because the teachers were only trying to teach stuff they had heard somewhere else. Oh wait, nevermind. i forgot you are old enough you wrote most of the history book.

hah, I guess I'm just used to other forums where the mod's make sure everyone plays nice. I'm not even used to being able to curse on a forum.

So I'm assuming you believe performance brakes are worth it since you have drilled rotors?

Performance brakes are worth it, just not cross drilled ones. Especially if you actually drive your truck hard and race it and don't just have a show truck.
If you abuse the brakes, then hell yes they're going to fail! :jester:

OP, sorry about mucking up your thread. Listen to 'Brian, The Master Mechanic' if you want to because I'm done with him! You'll talk to him until you're blue in the face but YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID!! :bye:
