look at the fine print on the back of the bottles, most of them will say in "severe conditions" the oil should still be changed at manufacturer recommended service intervals. "severe conditions" pretty much means any driving not done in a controlled laboratory. but like i said this is with MOST oils not all, read the bottle

not sure about mobil 1 but amsoil doesn't say this, they have their own rating.

Mobil 1 6 quarts + filter: $58.89 x 3 for 15k miles: $176.67
Mobil 1 5 quarts + 1 quart + filter = $22 + $5 + $10 = $37 X2 MAX for 15K = $74

Even YOU, with your discount, pay more for Amsoil than that. And this is getting the very best filter out there, while most of us will probably go with one that is 99% as good and about $3-4 cheaper, so that puts the total at $66-68 for 15K. Plus I can go buy it when I need the oil change, I don't have to order it in advance (PROCRASTINATION FTW!).

NO, I'd really like to know where you get your oil at $4.40 per quart. MOBIL1 5w30 IS ONLY RATED AT 5K or MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED CHANGE INTERVAL. So even if your getting your oil cheaper you still should be changing it THREE TIMES not two.

With my discount its $40.50 + $13.75 = $54.25 for 6 quarts of oil and filter and this will last me 25,000 miles, and if you want to include the membership fee its $64.25. STILL CHEAPER AND LESS WORK.

• Normal Service(3) – Up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

• Severe Service(4) – Up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

• Replace AMSOIL Ea oil filter at the time of oil change up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first (other brands at standard OEM* intervals).

There is this crazy new store called Wal-Mart that sells 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 for $22.

You change your filter after 10k right? Even on oil tests done BY Amsoil they determined that the filter needs to be changed after 10k or else it won't actually make it 25k. Just sayin....

That was with their old filters and it was every 12.5K.

And you can run even the regular Mobil1 longer than 5K miles. They only list it for 5K to cover thier ass. But that's beside the point. And Mobil1 does have PAO base stock in it. It's just not 100% PAO base stock. But if you can prove otherwise go right ahead. And I don't want to see the same tired link or argument about the Castrol case.

Mobil 1 Extended Perf 6 quarts + filter = $64.89.
Must be one damn expensive filter your run to have a $65 oil change even with the extended performance. Try Mobil1 Extended performance 5qt jug at Wally World for $26. And in another $6 for a 6th quart and even the expensive $13 K&N oil filter and you still aren't close to $65.

Duh, he uses Amway....er, Amsoil filters, and they ARE $33 each (which makes the math come out correct, lol).

I don't have a wally world near me nor know of it, its cheaper for me to buy online here and amsoil wins that period. Retail prices to retail prices my numbers stand. Hell if I had awesome prices like that i'd probably do that too.

i'm going to go ahead and say I hate you.

I finally convinced my parents to switch to synthetic in there Durango. The question is what do I put in it. I put Mobil 1 in my truck, but they think that is to expensive. So is there a good and cheap synthetic that anyone would recommend?

Also need a budget filter that is better than fram, and cheaper than K&N/Mobil 1.

Thanks in advance!
Unless the durango is being used for racing or towing in the desert at high speeds, u don't need a syn. Todays oils, rotella, havoline, etc are all basically semi-syns and are good for 5-9k mile oil change interval if being used in non-severe conditions. The longer oil change of amsoil has always been based on changing the oil filter, replacing the lost oil or using a by-pass filtration system. Syn oil gets just as dirty as non-syn oil.
By-pass filtration is the key to long engine and oil life even with non-full syn oils (group iv and v) . Actually all full syn oils are a combination of both groups.
suggest one look into the amsoil bypass oil filtration system or the toilet paper bypass filtration systems. www.bobistheoilguy.com has many threads on this. Changing the oil every 2-3k miles does the same thing, which is removing the contaminents from the engine that cause wear.
I use pureone filters and mainly group III oils, with always 1 qt of amsoil, for the cleaning effect of the esters. also using www.auto-rx.com
enjoy!

The guy was asking about cheapest synthetic option. Amsoil definitely does not fit that category and I highly doubt he'd be able to convince his parents to buy Amsoil if it took him this long just to get them to go along with the whole synthetic option. The Mobil1 5qt jugs at Walmart ore the cheapest option for a quality synthetic oil.

I've got rotella 15-40 in right now, I was considering the syn5-40 next but now I'm wondering if I need to do more research.

I was searching for an answer to this.
Lucas makes a "full synthetic" additive, is there any reason for some one using syn oil to not use the regular lucas additive? I got the regular in a gallon jug for $22 as compared to $15 a quart for the syn. The regular does say it can be used w/ synthetics.

I'm still questioning the use of the Lucas additive when you are already using a good synthetic oil? From the demonstrations in the store, sure it shows that more oil "sticks" to the little gears, but is that really a good thing? How many people run scrapers or windage trays to prevent oil wrap on the crank, and here you are dumping in an additive that would promote it. Make the engine work harder trying to move the oil around. I had 120K miles on the motor in my '99 when i totaled it running Mobil1 most of it's life and when I tore it apart, it still looked almost new inside. No sludge, and only slight wear on any of the cam, crank, and rod bearings, some showing no wear. Compared to what I've seen others post when using dino oil, my motor was in great shape.

Without filter and that would last you two changes. I'm pretty sure both of those want you to change them at 5k miles. If you drive an average of 12k a year, you'll have to go out and buy another 5 quarts of oil plus the cost of three filters. If you only drive like 6000 miles a year, amsoil is really expensive. For the average driver amsoil should be cheaper.

Also I quoted the prices without any discount. I usually get mine for about $70 bucks I believe (haven't done it in a while so I don't remember).

Bottom line: If they drive a lot (near or over 12k), its cheaper. If not, anything else would be cheaper.
Wow... 12k a year??? I drove my old car from november to june and never went more then like 80-90 mile trips away from my house. I put over 15k miles on it in that time period....

Ive had my durango on the road for like almost 3 weeks before i parked it and put over 2500 on it lol

I have had more than my fair share of vehicles and we have some fleet vehicles.
occasionally I would have the valve cover gaskets pulled to check the condition of the top end of the heads. when using synthetics and changing the oil at the manufacturer's recommended period all the motors look like new. We have a ford 5.4 triton with 238k on it and still runs strong with original tranny. With regular maintenance many motors with run almost forever. They run this vehicle into the ground and it idles for hours sometimes. Still looks good with no motor or tranny leaks. maintain, maintain and maintain
