I seem to be losing oil pressure when i come to a stop but it goes back up when i start to move again.I know their is enough oil in my truck, but the gauge drops and the little oil can light comes on.

Any ideas as to the problem?

p.s my truck is a 1990 3.9 auto 2wd

My wifes tahoe has been doing that for 40,000-50,000 miles.

I hope someone comes up with a good explination other than the oil pump is about to kick the shitter.

i put maybe 4 quarts of the cheap oil in that i have been using since my valve seals leak and it just burns off,but as long as i fill it up every month or so it's fine.

Yesterday i seriously put almost 5 quarts in.

check your oil pressure senor switch... I've seen it a few times at my garage.. its a cheap fix but sometimes its a pain to get too.. never done one on a Dak so idk what it will be like

try using a thicker weight of oil, also if your valve seals are going there are additives you can try that might help with the valve seal issue. Also, if your buring that much oil, you need to be checking it daily not monthly.
x2.. i would never want to run my oil so low i was having to add 4-5 quarts at once to get it to a normal running level.. your killing your motor

You could have crank bearings going out also.

i decided to change my oil the the filter today..and i filled up a 5 quart jug and a a gallon size sjug about 3 quarters of the way...so i def. had enough in my motor.

So hold on you had a 5 quart jug AND a gallon jug 3/4 full? You had way too much oil in that motor. sounds like youhad about 9 quarts of oil in the motor.
is this a diesel or your dakota in your sig? if its a diesel iots probably low but if its yo

In my opinion, these symptoms are normal. The oil pump is gear driven off of the back of the cam. When the motor is idling, it's not turning the pump fast enough to reach max pressure. When the motor is revving, then it can spin the oil pump to it's max pressure.

EDIT: I just now caught up with the light and low oil pressure warning. That could be simple, or it could be catastrophic. I'd try to get a manual gauge and see if it's zeroing out at idle. Then I'd try a sender. If that didn't work, I'd say it's gonna be either an oil pump, or the bearings.

The light will come on like i have low oil i guess? then the pressure gauge drops down and will come back up if i start to more or give it just a little gas.

sound like the pressure senor like i said a back at the begining of this thread... once again im not sure how your motor is set up.. i know ive done some that are easy and some that were a total pain in the ass
