Who do all you modded guys use for auto insurance? I just got my renewal notice from progressive today and was reading thru it and noticed that they say they wont insure my truck because of my mods.

"The company will not insure the following vehicles:
a. A vehicle that has been substantially modified from its original manufactured state for purposes of increasing the speed or acceleration capabilities of the vehicle. The following characteristics would be considered "substantially modified:"
-Raised or lowered suspension;
-Steering geometry changed;
-Engine or drive train altered or changed;
-Addition of traction bars; or
-oversized tires."

Well I am lowered, some drive train mods such as (gears, DTT, Valve body, and tuner) and I have Traction bars. So is this the norm or is it just progressive? I used to have Allstate and changed companies because Progressive is cheaper. Just curious as to whats out there. I understand that they cant insure a race car but dang my truck isnt a race car. I built it so it drives better and looks better. ugh!!

We switched to Country Mutual a few years back, they are not affiliated with Countrywide Home Loans. I would call Progressive and bitch, they should offer you a rider for mods.
Ill do some checking but im not to worried about it yet cause the truck isnt out yet. Just trying to see what the norm is and what everybody is using

thats total bullshit, I would think as long as the vehicle is street legal they should have to insure it. Of course they dont have to insure all the aftermarket parts, but the vehicle should be insured. I have progressive too, although I dont have any significant mods.

I've got hagarty for my Cuda, $20K agreed value full coverage, zero deductible, and it's like $100 a year. (but that's because it's not road worthy, so the protection is against damage from fire, theft, etc.)

when I had it on the road, full coverage was like $300 a year, but they are strict about what they will and will not insure. has to be a 2nd vehicle, and must prove ownership and current insurance on a daily driver, must be kept in garage, cannot use it for anything but pleasure driving, etc.

I asked them about my truck and they said 'sorry, it's a mass produced late model vehicle. we won't insure it" they didn't care that I spent $20,000 modifying the damn thing, or that it sees 3,000 miles or less a year, all they cared about was that it was built in 1998, and that the VIN# showed that its one of about 1.4 million already on the road.

if you look at the list of disqualifiers from progressive, they're doing it to cover their ass. you might have lowered your suspension using quality parts from a known manufacturer who has put the time and resources into R&D to make a safe, quality kit. but progressive doesn't know that. how can they tell the difference from a hotchkis suspension and some red neck who cut coils off his springs, and is using 2x4s as lowering blocks, and that his ball joints are outside of normal operating range, and is ready to fall apart at any moment?

I doubt it has anything to do with the price of the parts and how it could add to what they have to pay-out, I think it has to do with the fact that they don't want to insure (and thus, become liable) for a modified vehicle that could have a catostraphic failure at any moment, causing you to lose control and hit a bus full of nuns.

Bottom line, you need to call them NOW and ask them about your mods, and if they will still insure you. send pictures of the truck so they can tell it looks like a daily driver street truck, and not a stripped down, tubbed, caged race truck. If they still decline to cover you, then simply call someone who will. DO NOT play dumb. if your in an accident and they discover your truck is modded, they can use that to deny the claim, and then your fucked, especially if someone else is hurt and you get stuck with their med bills

maybe if you had receipts of the parts you used they would cover you. but yes, im sure they're doing it just to cover their asses due to things like ******** cutting coils and things. Kind of like how a dealer cant void your warranty if you use quality parts when you mod.

They wouldn't even let me get to that point. They said that a 1998 Dakota does not qualify for "classic" insurance, so they would have to insure it under their "exotic" status, but because it was a mass produced vehicle, it's not exotic, so I asked the guy on the phone, "what about the 20,000 I've spent modifying this truck? it's no longer a stock, mass produced vehicle" and the guy said "sorry. our policy is what it is, we won't cover it"

i talked to haggerty today....

my nova at 35,000 and my dak at 45,000 ......1080.00 anual premuim. i'm gona go with it

PM me the name of the person you talked to, and their extension number. I filled out an online application about 6 months ago, listed out my mods and how much money was into the truck, had a person call me on the phone to say that they wouldn't cover my dakota becaue it was too new, and mass produced.

I'd love to get some specialty insurance on the big block dakota since it'll see less than 2,000 miles this year
