my truck is doing some strange things so i think that i have a vacuum leak. What's the best way to check and where should i start? any know spots that start leaking?

thanks

great idea! will have to try that when i get off work. have you experienced any problem areas where i should start?
Normally it is the hoses coming off the Itake manifold. Does your a/c vents work correctly and your brakes not hard on the pedal? then it is in the engine compartment prior to the check valve on the brake booster.

Here's what I've read, but I've never had to try it.

Take a rubber hose and put one end in your ear. Then use the other end like a stethoscope. Search around with that loose end in the engine compartment, and you should be able to pinpoint a leak.

That works too, but if it is a small leak with the engine runnig you may not hear it.
K. Like I've said, never tried it. But what the hose does is eliminates the engine noise and just lets you hear what is directly next to the other end of the hose. So especially if you know where your vacuum lines are (I don't) then you can follow them around and should be able to find even a small one.

I know we use that method for finding exhaust leaks all the time.
Ah yes. Well cool, I know you know more about it than me, so I'll just shut up now....hehe.

UNLIT propane torch! :) You just barely crack the valve and run the torch tip over all the hoses.

Most brake cleaner is non-flammable, so I don't see how that would work...

Basically you introduce a flammable substance to the vacuum hoses, and if there's any leaks it will get sucked into the engine and cause the idle to rise. Propane is the method of choice because it doesn't get all over the place and you can pinpoint exactly where the leak is - at the tip of the torch..

Yeah i probably should have mentioned that :funny: but it was late and I ws tired.

hey guys, i don't have any brake cleaner. would i be able to use throttle body cleaner instead and when i hear the rpms die down then i found the leak? or should i go out and buy some brake cleaner?

so guys, i am having one heck of a time finding this leak. here is a bit of info that i hope helps narrow down the problem area. lately everytime that i put the truck into reverse (manual transmission) the rpm goes up 300 for a second or two then drops down to normal. also sometimes when i apply the brakes the rpm rises to 1000 for 4-5 seconds then returns to normal, when not moving of course.

any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Like I said, most brake cleaner is non-flammable and uses CO2 propellant so it won't work. Not to mention it does eat rubber, and it's not the best thing to spray all over your paint. Just use propane. No fuss, no mess. Tried and true method.
i am going to try propane tomorrow and will post back with results
