That's typically a problem with the IAC, or with the vacuum lines.

Your first stop SHOULD be to pick up the factory service manual - the one with Chrysler or Dodge on the top, not the ones with Haynes or Chiltons on them. If you dont' want to do that, almost as good is to sign up for at least a year at All Data's DIY site ( www.alldatadiy.com ) or Mitchell's DIY site ( eautorepair.net ).

Using the info there, troubleshoot the Idle Air Controller (IAC) valve; also, check all vacuum lines.

Hey I just bought a 2002 4.7 couple weeks ago. I went to start it today and was having the same exact issue.

It would die unless I keep my foot on the gas. I took off the air boxes on the engine to investigate and then tried to start it up and it did perfectly without pressing the gas.

I clean the TB and put a new air filter. When I went to start it was dying again then I press the accelerator a few times and then it went to a normal running idle.

Could it be a weak battery as well or the IAC? I accidentally left the Ignition on for a few hours. I also noticed my engine light which was on before is now gone also

From what you described so far, to me it seems as if something is starting to fail on an intermittent basis, and I do not think that this would be the battery. The IAC valve should be located on the TB, and since you pulled the hat off to clean it, maybe you bumped a losse wire to the connector when you removed the hat or were cleaning the TB? I'd check that connector first. You could take your battery to a parts store and have it tested, I suppose; how old is the battery?

. . . and when you have the hat off and are looking it over again, check the vacuum line from the TB or the manifold to se what condition it is in.

I actually checked the battery with a volt meter and it was 11.5 volts with the car off. At the time I thought that was an okay voltage but after some research it seems too low. I’ll try to put the battery on a charger or buy a new battery and see if it still stalls starting up

Thanks

The test that they could do at a parts store would go beyond just how many volts it was holding when in a static condition. How old is your battery?

I’m not sure how old it is because I just bought the car but I had it sitting for a week and it started right up the first time. I noticed if you remove the key in the wrong position , the Ignition stays on and that’s what I think drained my battery.

The key shouldn't come out unless it is in P and turned completely 'OFF'?
Do you have a bad lock & tumbler?

Could be.. if I remove the key when it’s fully horizontal some accessory stays on. I have to remove it with the slot on a slight angle to get everything fully shut off .

I removed the battery today and had it on a charger for a couple hours. It showed over 12 volts and started right up with no issues.

Now I replaced a leaking power steering hose. The steering feels smooth and no more leaks. The pump still has a whine. I think there is some air in the system. Will try to bleed it out tomorrow

I want to hijack this thread - sort of. I have a 2001 DAK with 4.7L. It intermittently is hard to start - like a weak battery. Then it starts but shuts right off unless I hold the gas on. Even had to roll start it once when this was going on. Mine is a 5 speed so it is difficult to drive and keep the gas pressed all the time.

I replaced the camshaft sensor as I had been experiencing other issues. I had not replace it as this issue had mostly gone away for at least three months. Started again so I went ahead and swapped the sensor. was a little hard to start afterwords but ran better. Later I tried to start it and it was in full will not run mode with really hard starting weak battery thing. A:SO - when locking with the fob the horn sounds wimpy like only one is going off or the power to it is cut way back.

did the turn the switch to run three times and showed P-none..

help? I will look at the things listed above, but none of what I am reading talks about it sounding like the battery is nearly dead.

One more thing: my keys do not work well. they both must be inserted one way only or they will not turn. I had to replace the lock cylinder and ignition switch in my 99 GC because a lot of weird stuff was happening. is it possible that those components are having a part in this?

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport 4.7 . I can get it started if I give it gas but once is starts and I let off the gas it dies. Can anyone help me?
I had this exact same problem I replaced the throttle position sensor and it fixed it. If this is your problem remember the TPS goes in with a quarter turn twist . Put it in the hole with the top turned to the 3 o'clock position then twist it counterclockwise till the bolt holes line up. This puts tension on the inner spring. Good luck.
