Well, from what you've said, it sounds like (No offense) but you had NO idea what you were gettin into! Doesn't mean your out of luck, just might take some work. I'm no pro at this, but there are alot of 'polishing' compounds out there.

Personally I love 3M product and have never had one cut too much. 1200 grit is still quite 'rough' I've used 2500 to remove scratches before...

For your sake, I hope you didn't get through your clear coat, if ya did, I haven't the foggiest what you do to fix that.

Buy some of the finest polishing compound you can find (put some on your finger, and rub it around, see how 'smooth' it feels, you should barely be able to feel any grit to it at all, that's the stuff you want.

Gently, and I mean GENTLY rub the area with that on a clear terry cloth (or diaper cloth). Let the polish do the work, you are NOT pushing down on the surface, merely moving the polish around on it letting IT do the polishing.

I might have my technique wrong, but I've always gotten awesome results, so I kinda doubt it :jester:

Once your done with that, get yourself a high quality wax, none of this Turtle Wax BS, get some Mothers or Meguirs. (Or more expensive than that, if you really wanna) and give it hell. Unless you managed to get through the clear coat, this should bring you one HELL of a shine (Maybe Tooo shiny, somtimes you have to gently blend the polish into the surrounding panels...)
