Hi everyone. I have been searching on here for an answer to a problem i may or may not have, with no luck. I have a 1991 dakota 4x4 that i am trying to replace the upper right ball joint in. The manual i have, and everything i have found through searching here said to press the ball joint out, but when i did it looked like the control arm and the ball joint were threaded, and it looked like the ball joint was supposed to be unscrewed from the control arm. I am seriously hoping that isnt the case. So my question is basically this, is the ball joint supposed to be pressed out, and what looks like threads to me are just grooves that match the ball joint to help keep it in the control arm, or is it actually supposed to be unscrewed. I wont be getting the new ball joint until tommorrow, so i dont have that to compare to yet. I need to know asap, just in case i have to go to the junkyard tommorrow to get another control arm. Thank you in advance for all your help.

I have a 92. On ours you have to thread it out. I rented a special adaptor from advance auto parts to get it out. It actually is not that hard of a job to do. I did both uppers on mine during my suspension redo. Just make sure you take your time doing it. The threads are kinda wimpy and if you strip them out you'll most likely have to weld it in place. I'll try to find the diagrams and post them up for you.
