Ok so Nitto says my tires should be max inflated to 51psi...so how much do I do in lbs.? I'm confused...

no thats the max inflation pressure. For example the max they should reach when the tires are hot and you are beating on them. you should still go by what the vehicle calls for on the door jam or maybe just a tad more. Ours call for 35 psi when cold so I wouldnt go much above that.

PSI is what people call lbs. its pounds per square inch. Its the same thing.

I figured, and I went with 255/50-17 instead

guess you get the duh of the day award huh? lol

yea, 34-36psi tops.

The only true way to know how much air pressure(psi) to run in your tires is to find out how much each corner of your truck weighs and then find the tire makers spec for that weight. Now,the more practical way is to start at what dodge says to run and drive it around for a while, checking tire wear and sidewall wear.Keep this in mind, there are a shitload of tires out on the street on fullsize or heavier trucks that have no business on these trucks because they're not intended for that much weight.I.E.a tire good for 1,500# at 50 psi x4 =6000#.How much does a decked out durango weigh with 4 adults in it.

Yea the lightest i go on trucks is load range c (6ply). The d range (8ply) are ok if you haul a decent amount in it, but the e range (10ply) are overkill..

I just checked the 2 trucks in my garage and this is what i got.
on my R/T i run nitto 450's 275/50-17.Tires say max 2337# @ 50 psi.I run 38-40
on my tahoe,goodyear mt's 265/75-17 tires say max 2535# @ 44 psi.I run 36-38.

I wouldnt run a P rated tire on any truck, those sidewalls are to flimsy, and ive seen em blow out for no reason.
what do you mean by "P rated"?

Like say the tire is a 235-75-r15 and its a tire not meant for a truck, say it goes on a minivan (this is just an example) the tire side will read P235-75-r15. You always have a rating on a tire, and the P (passenger) rating isnt for use on a lt(light truck). There not meant to handle a load. Truck tires will always read LT---/--/-- or ive seen some that didnt say that but they will have there load rating on the sidewall. (unless its a standard size tire like say a 33x12.5x15). But you will always have a ply rating on a truck tire, and a passenger tire will start with a P.

Hm, i havent seen to many trucks and suv's comin in with P rated tires. Had a guy come in with a 97 dodge 2500 to get tires. So we get down to talkin bout what he wanted and he kept insisting on gettin these snow tires that were not rated for a truck they werent an LT. So im tryin to talk him out of them for 20 mins telling him that they will blow out with that much weight on them, well he insisted on the snow tires, and i finally gave up, and told him id sell him the tires, but we will offer no warrenty on them. So i call up my tire guy and he sends em down, i install them. He leaves and about to hours latter hes on the phone sayin he blew his right rear tire out. I told him to stop down and we would sell him a set of tires with the CORRECT weight rating for his truck. Needless to say he takes me (and the other techs at my shop)s word for it now.

I have a set of Uniroyal Liberator P235/75(70)/15 on my Dak, and have had them on for about a yr and I drive my truck like a truck and have had no problems with them. Except when I fuck up.

Like, once, I bust a tire off the bead. So, I put a tire that had a flat, but held some air when I changed it, on to drive to get them repaired, with was less that a quarter mile, but I didn't understand how slow you have to drive on a flat. Needless to say, by the time I got where I was going, I'd fucked the sidewall to hell and had to replace the tire.

Well on a dakota it isnt really that much strain, but when you get into the 1500s and up, it starts to get hairy. I personally wouldnt run them, but its all in what you want and how much you want to spend.

Also another thing to think about, if theres a P rated tire and a LT rated tire, same size, same tire, the LT will have more tread then the P rated, more meaning deeper tread.

What if there is no letter in front of the number sizes on my tire? Mine is just 255/55/R18. They are Falken STZ-04's. i was just wondering, i'll have to look at my tires tommorow for the other stuff.

I always use the round black ones on my truck lol
