I have a 01 dakota v6 4x4. I think my truck has a 42re transmission in it witht he 3.9L motor.. anyways I want to beef up the engine some.. So I am going to plan a small little single turbo build on it to help it out some. issue is I think the trans might not hold up at all to the extra 75-100 ft/lbs ill be tossing at it, if not more..

can i swap in a 46re transmission in its place? if so what is involved? I just dont want my truck dead on a trail.. when i build something i want to upgrade about anything i can think of that may fail.. my axles are stout, the motor is a brand new rebuilt one with scat rods and lower compression forged pistons for the turbo cause I knew I would do this.. however the trans is stock still.. any advise??

If it's trail use, why not just swap a 360 with a 46RE. Turbo on the trail might not be the right application. I could see keeping the V6 if you are going to autocross or something.

Yes. You will also need the computer and wiring harness (or just run 2 extra injector wires). Transfer case will bolt up.

They will, but worst case, just move them over to the V8. All will interchange.

you already have the bucks in your V6 with a clean sheet I'd go 360 but...
If you are not rock crawling...
you can put in a turbo with a waste gate and make it work for torque not high rpm horsepower
Thse of you in high altitude get an aneroid (altitude compensating) waste gate
With a reprograming kit and a big cooler your trans will be fine
it might not last as long as the big trans but you can break either of them
one habit to get into is to get off/ ease off the gas when a tire spins up BEFORE it gets traction- the sudden hook up breaks parts
there are also well know reasons for sprags to break- use manual low

You could do all that, but why. For less money, less complexity, and factory reliability you could have the torque and power with plenty of room to grow if you decide to in the future.

You can put a TRANSGO reprogramming kit in you current valve body
The valve bodies interchange
you could acquire a 46 tranny and build it- then swap
I've never done mud but thinking that heat could be a problem
If you go V8 you could always buy two more rods:)
however Forged Dodge rods are ok for most applications
The Direct Connection bolts are (were last time I checked) SPS
just as good as ARP and a lot less money
Builders can grind the parting lines off themselves
A shot-peen will toughen them up
Anyone had a rod itself go without a piston or bearing going first?
bushed or pressed pin- your choice
I have offset bushed the pin to correct compression height

valve bodies interchange (similar years)
Overdrive parts interchange
I made a slight error-early trans had 22 degree gears
late trans have 15 degree gears
obviously all must match and 15 degree gears do not put as much thrust on the Achilles heal of the thrust washers
While a 46 can replace a 42-44 the 46-47 will be LONGER with all that that entails
Those of you in the changeover years to the 545 make a positive ID of your trans.

The 46 is the same length as the 42-44 as long as you are comparing 2wd to 2wd or 4wd to 4wd.
