I'm gonna drag race for the first time saturday at the local strip. Are there any tips or hints to help increase my speed and reaction time?

watch exactly how a couple people run before you go. make sure you pull up untill both staging lights are lit up-alot of people dont watch before their first time and look retarded because they dont know how to do the staging :biggthump

Can you look it up for me DownBoi.

ok, i dont know if this applys to manuals or autos, or V6s or V8s, but from what i read, (there was several posts, i just did a search for Launching) u should launch at 1600. If ur gonna warm up ur tires, u should just spin em until they start smoking, let em spin for a second or two, and that should be good. As far as shifting goes, im guessing u drive an auto, so it should just do it by itself, i dont do Autos (i HATE Automatics) so i dont really know...and as far as reaction time...i guess the trees always light up at the same speed. Just watch the trees as ur coming up to the track, try to learn the exact speed of it, and try to be as accurate as possible, better late than never, or early for that matter.

the time u launch doesnt affect ur timeslip, so if ur nevous i would jus wait for it 2 be lit then go and have horrible reaction times but still a accurate time slip until you get pratice and understand how everything works better. i hope that makes sence

where u goin racing at anyway...I know theres one right in Montgomery like right by where im moving to, but i told my friend i wanna hit up different spots when i get down there.

I was wondering if someone was going to agree with me on this. By the time you let off of the brake petal and push the throttle down, that delay of everything to come together to move the truck forward that .5 of a sec will have gone by. You don't have to beleve me if you don't want too but if you wait until the green light comes on I'll bracket race you anyday. :biggthump

mmmm yeah, good point, i was thinking from the view of driving my truck, i just thought with a manual, goin on the last yellow, would be JUUUSSSTT too early...

What about OD on or off? What do think would be the best? The Strip is in Walker County right outside of Jasper.

i usually run with mine off, though i have run a couple times with it on i didnt feel a big difference. ive heard having it on affects shifting, so i always turn it off. :banana2:

when ever you get there you will be a little nervous. don't worry about everyone gets nervous and figity. drive around the water box (dude spraying water on the track) spin your tires a little bit just to clean the water that got on them off. the track officials should wave you by and such telling you when it is okay to do so. keep pulling up till the staging lights come on (4 little yellow lights). they are activated by lazers that are tripped by your front tires. stall your truck to around 1500 if you can and when the last big yellow light comes on let off the brake and push down on the gas. you will have to adjust your technique a little because of tire spin. if you spin to much adjust your throttle pressure, also watch and talk to guys at the track who are adjusting tire pressure and such. normally they will love to tell you how much they know. :biggthump

You want OD off, so after tyou cross the strip and let off, it wont shift up teo coast, it will start engine braking in 3rd. This will help slow you down and make it easier on your brakes. When you get really fast, you need it off so it doesnt shift into 4th during your run.

Im assuming youll be on radials so:

after teching, when ur up, drive around the water and line the truck up just foward of the water. Do a brakestand till they just being to smoke, the roll out of it, get on the brakes. Pull up till the first yello comes on. Then let off the brake just barely enough to make the truck move 1/2 and inch, repeat till the second staging light comes on.

Dont stall up your truck, it will just spin the tires. Leaving off idle and rolling onto the throttle quickly on the last yellow will yeild the best results. Most of all have fun.
