well im new to the site and the truck had it a few months now. just woundering what some of u guys think about the best bang for the buck performence wise. right now im looking for a rear end because it has an open dif. what do u guys suggest for that? can i just swap gears with a posi? while i do this should i change out the gear size? thanks for your help

Hey man, welcome!

Im gonna do the same thing you are thinking with my 92'. I have a 3.55 posi, but I want a something more like a 3.91. I have been told they are common enough to look around a while and just get the right one the first time. Im gonna just swap the whole thing, drum to drum, and at the same time switch to 5 lug. I think this is the single best thing I can do for the money. My friend has a truck just like mine, but has a 3.9x rear, and his truck is quite a bit faster, but runs a bit more rpm on the freeway ( small price to pay :eek:nethumb: )

I dont know for sure, but I think the "posi" units the Dodges use are similar to other makes in the sense that you can take them out as a unit without having to remove the ring gear or pinion. I could be wrong though, its been know to happen lol :jester:

If nobody else responds, I will let you know in the next month or so, as I plan to do this very soon.

ok yeah i was thinking of changing drum to drum but i figured it was going to be to expensive.

My htought is it would be easiest and probably less expensive in the scheme of things if you could find an entire rear end with a Sure Grip (don't say "posi" please, that's a GM name!) and swap the whole thing. Otherwise, you may run into trouble changing only the differential. If you do, you must swap your ring gear to the new one, don't forget the tone ring too. If you get lucky the backlash will be OK. If changing gear ratio too, then you'll need to set the pinion depth, crush that uncrusheble crush collar (new one), etc, etc, etc. If the pinion depth or back lash are off, you'll get noise and excessive wear. I've never checked but the rear axle assy shouldn't be that expensive. There's got to be thousands of them in the scrap yards.

Around where I live there are plenty of pick your part yards. I can get a whole unit for 80 dollars on a half off day, otherwise its twice the price. I still think thats pretty cheap and easy for the acceleration you could gain.

PS-I used the term posi in quotes, everyone knows what posi means, and its easier to type out. :nana: :jester:

i wish we had that around me but none i know of. any one near wis. or ill.

I don't know of any around here in wisconsin, but as far as mods go, the m1 intake is always a good start, pullin the flap infront of the air tube if you havn't already, 1.7 roller rockers are next on the list for me, headers really won't add much and arn't worth the money in my opinion, but they make it sound way cooler.

i haven't did that yet, because im out of comission right now because i have a broken collar bone, the flap that you are talking about is that the one behind the grill? M1koter my truck is painted the same colors as your is.

thats where the flap is located, just find it and rip it out, I pulled my grill back to get at it. it basically just you ram air for free

Don't know of any "pick your own" yards. Seems there is no such thing in Wisconsin. Around here anyway, those are a thing of the past.

ok thats what i thought. im right by lake geneva. by the way that is a bad ass challenger

What!?!?! No pick n' pulls over there? Thats lame, we have like 20 of them in California. Even so, spend a couple hundred bucks at a regular yard and you can still get a rear end, at least I imagine you could. Thats still not bad for the change in the buttometer you would notice...

Since you have an open diff, you can install a locker. Depending on what rear you have I would swap that out too.

From what you have 3.92 is not going to be that much different, I would recommend at least 4.10/11 if not 4.56's. 3.92 will be better than what you have, but not by much.

Yeah, I agree. I just want a bit better acceleration without climbing too high in RPM range on the freeway. Plus I should be swapping a 360 Magnum in the truck by the end of the summer. That should be just what I want from my Dakota :drive: :jester:
