I just replaced the rear breaks on my dakota and put new srpings on it aswell. I adjusted both sides till they were just barely rubbin and they worked good for about a couple days, then they weren't working at all...I adjusted them again, same thing, worked for a few days and then nothing...any ideas why they wont stay adjusted?....Thanks Mike...(Its the 9in rear end if that matters)

adjusters in backwards? or on wrong side?

I dont think....i compared them to my dads brakes on his dak and they are in right...well atleast they appear to be in right.

i think i may have the same problem, back brakes arent grabbin at a stop like they should with new shoes and springs, compared to how they were before. i think imma try to adjust them all the way back in. some of those springs are a PITA.

Check to make sure your adjusters are in correctly and check the star wheel on the adjuster, there should be an arm that touches this star wheel to let it move out and not in, if the arm is not contacting the adjuster will just back in, a good way to test this is to just adjust the adjusters out and not to touch the arm at all when doing so, you will just hear a clicking for every tooth of the star wheel u pass with the arm. if that is working properly check to see if your wheel cylinders are working properly...... these are the only 2 locations that make the shoes go in or out.

Well i just checked everything out and all is well...adjuster is in right, the arm is just bellow it, not touching but its about a 1/16" away i just greased everything up i'm going to try that and see what happens....how and where do you adjust the parking break at?

Edit....after reading this i realize the arm should have contact...so how do i make it have contact?

Is should be connected to a guid cable or a spring, just follow it and see if everything is connected right..... sorry its hard to explain drum brakes on the internet........ at least you found the problem

Thanks....i'm stuck here, the cable that is attached to the holder is alittle lose...dont know how to tighten it up...this way the arm would move up and touch the star...any ideas there?

I think i got them now...i forgot how i took the stuff apart at the top so i read the directions and it said to put the brakes on, then the metal clip, then the cable for the adjuster, then the springs, well that wasn't working so i put the brakes on then the cable for the adjuster, then the metal clip then the springs and now they work.....dont know if thats how its susposed to be but they work.
