The shift pattern you mean? It's pretty tight. It's about the same as a Hurst shifter in an NV3500 truck if you've driven one of those. The pistol grip is a must on these if you get one:

I love how that looks with the stock console and all! did you use the middle shifter location? and that's a B-Body shifter right?

I chose to save a couple hundred dollars on mine though, and keep the rear shifter location--with the big block, it's now located about 4 inches behind the hole in the floor, so I'm going to cut out the floor and build a custom shifter boot, and run the E-Body pistol grip shifter, which is more of a straight up and down piece, since it's going to be about 8-10 inches to the rear of the stock shifter location. and by moving there, I'll probably lose my cup holder that pulls out of the center console section, so I'll make a custom cup holder/cover for the stock hole, it'll look totally custom and I'll still have cup holders!

Yep. The TKO mid shift position comes up in exactly the stock location. That is Keisler's custom shifter for 70 B-body non-console cars. It was $75 on top of their regular shifter price. Definitely worth it. Their regular shifter will also hit the dash in the newer style dash/interior trucks. '01 and up I think. This won't hit the dash in any of them.

couldnt you swap in a nv3500? and use most of the ram parts like bellhouseing and stuff?
You could, and shred it with an RT. It would last for a while, but not very long with any drag racing. Besides, the NV3500 is more of a truck tranny, meaning the low first gear and not set up for performance driving. Longer shifter throws and gear spacing isn't set up for fun.

Might have missed it from earlier, but what big block are you sticking in. Sounds like a cool project. You will loose the center console though like you said. Another T-56 truck has his shifter coming out right where you are talking about. The front cup holder area is the only thing affected and he has a strait up shift pole. Kind of nice really, he couldn't mod his center console though, the pad is too high and gets in the way. Have to build a total custom one for him.

how so, thats the same tranny thats in my neighbors ram and has all the aftermarket stuff on it and runs 13.12 in the quarter and pulls a 3 axle horse trailer. it pisses me off because even with the trailer he can still pull away from my dakota, and its not pretty watching a crew cab long bed ram with a 3 axle horse trailer pull away from you.

What kind of Ram is it? I bet he has an NV4500 in his if he has a 360 in it. That or it's a diesel and there's no way an NV3500 will live behind a deisel. They are only rated for 300 ft/lbs on the input side IIRC.

^^^ my thoughts exactly!!!

BTW, from what I gathered there's no aftermarket performance parts for the nv-3500. Heck even New Venture stop making this tranny around 2000, after that Muncie has been making them.

nv-3500= 300ft.lbs
nv-3500(hd)= 345ft.lbs

the nv-4500 came on 2500 and 3500 rams with the HD on diesel
the nv-3500 was used on the 1500
even so both came with the 5.9
if you're worried about blowing the tranny then grab the nv-4500

Sorry to dig up an old thread....but, if you swap from an auto to manual do you need a computer from a manual truck? I was told by B&G that you need a manual computer because the auto computer cannot be converted over to manual. Something about the hardware is different and changing the software will not allow allow me to run a manual. I was also told I need a V8 ECU and not from the 4.7L. So that narrows the ECU selection down to a 318 or 360 with an NV3500 from that factory. I think that is a pretty rare option as I cannot find any ECU's like this. I was told a 3.9L cannot be converted over to a 5.2L or 5.9L either.

I really want to ditch this 46RE for either a TKO or a T-56. The hangup is, will I need a stand alone ignition/fuel control for the engine since the auto computer cannot be converted or can the auto ECU be converted to manual.

This is all going in an 02 Dakota R/T.

You pretty much answered your own question in the second sentence. You need a PCM from a 5-speed truck. 318 5 speeds aren't too rare, keep an eye out for one or maybe check if you can buy one new from a dealership? Any type of standalone isn't required for the conversion, a flash might be mandatory though.

No you don't need a pcm from a 5 speed truck. Don't know what Dave is talking about now because he is the one who flashed my auto PCM for the manual. It works perfect with no codes at all. I think he doesn't want to do it anymore is my guess, not for $400 anyway.

Just use your stock computer and flash the auto trans specs out.
