ok here's the story. was driving the truck along then all of a sudden it died, noticed the alternator was arking. so replaced the connector and the arking was gone. had to get the truck jumped by one of my friends, got the truck started but now the truck wont engane into gear. the shifter goes into each gear. but it doesnt engage. it doesnt make any noises. is the problem just the solenoid or is the tranny blown? engine light is on.

looks like the problem is in the TCM (transmission control module). maybe the arcing alternator fried it. have the TCM checked out

0700

The Transmission/Transaxle Controller monitors the malfunction of sensors and actuators relating to Transmission/Transaxle Control. If any malfunction is detected, they inform the PCM by sending a signal - By illuminating the MIL and by setting the P0700 code.

P0700 means that a code has been set in the Transmission/Transaxle Controller.

This code is for information ONLY.

If P0700 is present, check for Transmission/Transaxle codes.

Hey did you get that info out of a diagnosis book for dakotas or something? I was just messing around on ebay and bidded on a set of books for a 00 Dakota, it is four of them and one covers tranny, the other is body, and I can't remember the other 2. Maybe it wasn't a bad investment after all

yep. TCM is fried. truck still has powertrain warrenty with a $500 deductable. a new TCM is $500 plus labor. found a used one for $250 and will only cost me $50 labor for a local place to replace it. thanks for the help guys.

the installation is simple but i think the dealership has to do a quick learn unless you have the drb tool.

Service and Repair

STANDARD PROCEDURES
The quick learn procedure requires the use of the DRB® scan tool.

This program allows the electronic transmission system to recalibrate itself. This will provide the proper transmission operation. The quick learn procedure should be performed if any of the following procedures are performed:

* Transmission Assembly Replacement
* Transmission Control Module Replacement
* Solenoid Pack Replacement
* Clutch Plate and/or Seal Replacement
* Valve Body Replacement or Recondition

To perform the Quick Learn Procedure, the following conditions must be met:

* The brakes must be applied
* The engine speed must be above 500 rpm
* The throttle angle (TPS) must be less than 3 degrees
* The shift lever position must stay in PARK until prompted to shift to overdrive
* The shift lever position must stay in overdrive after the Shift to Overdrive prompt until the DRB indicates the procedure is complete
* The calculated oil temperature must be above 60 ° and below 200 °

well tcm isn't the problem, when they dropped the tranny pan there were metal shavings. so i had to go out and spend money on a new catalytic converter so i can take it to the dealership and not have to worry about them voiding the warrenty.

keep us posted. i would like to know what's wrong. i don't understand what the cat has to do with the transmission. oem converters generally have longer warranty terms than the rest of the vehicle.

Sounds like a typical dealer!
