I'm looking at getting some new shows for my '02 Dakota 4x4.

Im stuck between the Performer IAS, and the Rancho RSX or 5000's.

Majority of my driving is on pavement.... but when I do go offroad, I'm dealing with washboard, mud, and going over rocks (up a mountain) that can be up to 8" tall.

If most of your driving is on the road, you most likely want a shock that isn't valved too stiff. All of those you mentioned are way too stiff. I know some here swear by them, I've driven in several Durango and Dakotas with all of the shocks you mentioned. All had a hard ride, this is ok for an off road shock but you pay the price when you drive the pavement. I had Pro- Comp ES3000 when I bought my D and they were terrible. I recently did my homework and decided to put on KYB Gas -A-Just shocks. Very nice ride.... I do the same driving as you and think I made a good choice. My other option was the Rancho RS9000 if you want to shell out the $$$ for them.I've off-roaded with my KYB's and they were great!!

I actually have the KYB's in my '76 Chevrolet Nova and I liked how they rode too over the stock shocks (but I guess at 80,000 miles anything would be an improvement).

I originally had the KYB's on my list, but took them off as I figured it would be nice that automatically adjusted depending on the situation. I will have to do some more research.

The Rancho RS9000's are out... as they are $150 a shock.

The KYB's automatically adjust to road conditions and are a quality monotube shock. They have a lifetime warranty are a priced cheap, so how could you go wrong??? Good luck with your choice!!

I called the only KYB dealer in town today. He actually sugeeted their Monomax over the gas-a-adjust. Said it was on par with Bilstein. Anyone have any experience with these (the Monomax)?

Although at $130 bucks a shot its a hell of a lot more than the Edelbrock's.... but I have experience with KYB's and have been very happy with them, so I might stick with them.

The Monomax is a nice shock but still alittle too firm for my liking. I've heard good and bad about these..mainly they are valved too firm for the road. I looked at them but decided I wanted a softer ride but nothing mushy. The Gas-a- just seemed to be the best of both, firm ride and I've had no issues when off-roading.If you're going to spend $130 each you might as well spend alittle more and get the 9000's....that's the ultimate shock and you can adjust to your liking.

I have rancho 9000s. I love them I can adjsut my suspension from the softest to the kidney jarring. i usually leave it on #5 but on #1 it rides as easy as a caddy

How do you change the settings and how easy is it to do that? I know you can buy a kit so you can change it in the truck... but I'd rather just do it manually.
