Ok, you guys think that if I can get my hands on 318 heads I should buy them? I have a N/A 5.9L and I want to upgrade the heads. If I bought the heads, you think I can port then and make them into performance heads? Think I can pull it off, I'm not a beginner at stuff like this, but it would be my first pair of heads. What do you guys think?

just be careful hoggin out the intake runners. you dont want to make the material too thin where the lifter tube is. thats one major spot for restriction. the other is in the exhaust port. gasket match, and blend in towards the inside of the head. also the intake and exhaust valve guide bosses act like a brick wall in there. tear drop them and you should have your self a nice set.

i have a set that i need to unload though. all that has been done. just needs to be finished up, and decked, then a valve job. im also pretty sure 318 heads on a 360 will net you a little more compression also. which cant hurt ya.

I don't know what to do, if I get them for free, you think it's worth it? I want to make sure these are perfect.

I would say no. You can use them as a project for yourself for something to play with, but I wouldn't use them. Stock heads love to crack between the valve seats quite often. Putting all that work into a set of heads that are prone to cracking isn't really worth it. You will need to do a valve job when you're done. A flow bench will help you to see if your work is helping or hurting things. There is such a thing as removing too much material. I would leave the porting up to a shop. A minor clean up and a good valve job can go a long way.

If you are putting that much effort into a set of heads, get a set of R/T, Edelbrock, or the HD Magnum heads. It will be worth it to have something that will last.

I agree..

Dont waste time and effort and $$$ on heads that are so prone to cracking. They may be ok now, but they still can crack later on down the road too.....

Then you have to start all over again basically.

so prone to cracking? i never seem to have had that problem. they crack where?

Magnum heads are notorious for cracking in the chamber. Sometimes between the seats.

Id bet that if everyone here had their heads magnafluxed, at least 25% of them would be cracked. They are THAT bad. Its pretty well known in the aftermarket world as well. Dealer world definately knows it. We replace so many of them that we keep the rebuilt heads in stock......

Nice heads, but $2k+!?

Figures - you can get heads that flow over 250 to 265
for F's & C's for about $1200!

That's a lot of buck but not really a whole lotta bang!

I picked up a lo miles used set of top name brand alum heads that
flow at least as well for my car for $600.

If you do decide to do a set yourself, Mopar used to (they might still) have available some head porting templates for the Magnum heads. They are great for the do it yourselfer.
Yep, I'm aware.
