After my 2002 Dakota with a 4.7 blew a head gasket a few months ago, I've been slowly tearing things down and rebuilding. While I'm at it I'm replacing the timing chains among other things, and since it seems I can only get the 3rd chain if I buy a timing set, that's what I plan on doing. I need some help picking the right one though; on RockAuto several of the more basic kits say "Engines with silent type upper chains only."

So naturally, my question is, what on earth does that mean, and how do I know if that will work with my truck? Do I need to spend the extra $30 and buy the Cloyes set instead of the $118 Enginetech one?

And one other small question; on all the kits that include sprockets, it says something along the lines of "Caution: You must VERIFY your original cam sprocket to the new sprocket to prevent possible CATASTROPHIC FAILURE!" What does it mean 'verify'?

Silent chains have plates that form teeth where regular chains look similar to bicycle chains. 2002 yours should be silent type. Highly recommend Cloyes over enginetech if keeping truck. 2002 was a crossover year, early ones used JTEC ECU's (3 plugs) and later used NGC ECU's (4 plugs). Need to be sure choose correct set so has correct cam sprockets.

NO, not saying that.
Said recommend Cloyes vs Enginetech as in brands!
Also said you need to find out which ECU your truck has. That will help determine which set you need. Have you done that?
Have you determined if you have silent chain?
Need to be sure to choose correct set so has correct cam sprockets, chains etc.

I have a JTEC. The cheapest Cloyes set that would fit it is $250, which is about double what I have to spend. I think I'm gonna go with this Enginetech one but I'm not sure yet.
