'sup peeps!
okay - so I have an '02 Dak QC 4x4, which seems to be growing bigger and bigger every day. We use it for crawling around the trails out here in Colorado and Moab and the truck really does great as it is now on 33's...but it will eventually get a lot more 'beef' under the frame and likely be on 40's or 42's. When that day comes it's gonna need a lot more 'engine'...and yah I can beef up or stroke or supercharge the 360 in there now...but I've had a virgin late 70's 440 sitting on a stand for years just waiting for something awesome to happen to it, and I'm seriously considering doing the mods and dropping it into the Dak.
To make the swap as painless as possible I would keep things simple and get the typical hardware like the JW ultrabell and a 46RH tranny, all of the Schumacher swap stuff (headers and motor mounts etc), and the rest of the driveline will be of the 'off-road' variety (D60 front, 14b rear, Atlas t-case...).
Naturally I would 'delete' all of the factory EFI hardware and wiring etc and just sell all of that with the engine and tranny, and go with a stand-alone aftermarket EFI and ignition system, and the trans will be simple enough to control with aftermarket hardware and toggles for the O/D and L/U. Steering will be all aftermarket so no issues there, and I'll probably upgrade the brakes to hydroboost.
I do have a couple questions I'd like to ask and would appreciate y'alls thoughts about the following, and I'd appreciate any other nuggets of info you feel may be pertinent.
1) dash/HVAC functionality - will the factory gauges, HVAC, wipers etc still work with an engine/transmission fully 'separated' from the original harness(es)? I presume the factory sensors will function the same whether they are plugged into a 360 or a 440, and the fuel tank sending unit will be unchanged.
2) will the original radiator and A/C and such fit in the factory location with a big block in there?
3) I will have a tone ring on the 14b rear so I presume with the dakotadigital converter the the speedo and cruise will still work...
4) what other things am I missing??
Thanks for your inputs. Again the question isn't why not just crank up the 360 - I just want to focus on the 440 swap...or for that matter any other engine/trans combo 'isolated' from the factory engine management system(s).
Thanks folks!
