My little bro has a 2001 4x4 dakota he's wanting to put 17" rims with 33" tires. He bought a rough country torsion key + rear block with new shocks kit. My question is does he actually need the new torsion keys or can he just crank the factory keys high enough to clear the 33's

i have a 04 and i have after market keys and could barley get the front level with the rear without blocks. i just did a lift with 33s and it scrubbed pretty good on the front bumper. i had to put a body lift on to keep from cutting it up.

What kinda 17" wheels are you talkin about? If they are 17x9 R/T wheels you'll need more lift or spacers. I have a 3" torsion key and block kit and those wheels. With 32" tall tires I rub a titty bit. If he has a rim with an offset he will be okay.

Check out my thread.

that's odd, I found that with RT's w/ my 33's I don't rub, but when I put my Rock crawlers back on, they rub a lil bit... but I also cut my bumper + inner fender, ..

Mines stock height w/ torsion crank..

I just this weekend put a 1 inch body lift to eliminate rubbing at all..

But if your willing to cut, you can fit 33's on stock torsion crank NP

maybe since your truck is an 04??? but really how different could they be? the rubbing I get is on the frame... nowhere else.

our trucks came with an optional 31, I think guys have put 275s or 285s on stock wheels. not sure. so cranking them and a little cutting/trimming will get you there.

just be careful with cranking the t bars you'll get a little stiffer ride, and don't max it out. my alignment guy who has 30+ years doing alignments said he has seen torsion bars so maxed out that they're ready to snap with a hard enough bump because you take away from the shocks being able to compress and do the work. I had mine cranked all the way after my kit and it rode like a stiff bitch. hitting bumps sounded like the frame was hitting something, not pleasant.

sorry for the lack of grammar and punctuation. using an iPod without the auto guide app lol.

I think mine hits my frame when I'm at full crank and hit a bump, Your right.

It just never rubbed so bad to the point where I got concerned I guess, but I don't care about things others would, My truck isn't my daily driver

Ohhh okay, thank God. I thought I was the only one, I feel better now. I thought maybe something was off with my front end. Disregard my ignorance.

99DAKOTA, how in the world do you guys do the blocks and the back not be so much higher. i have mine crancked till they hit the bump stops and the back is still a bout a half inch higher with no blocks

well in my sig pic and garage pics they were all the way cranked. with the stock rims and new winter tires it's aligned an lowered a little bit.

Ok I cranked his factory keys and put on the 17" wheels and 285/70/17 nitto m/t. How much higher will the front go with aftermarket keys/shocks
Because these rub the front bumper pretty bad when turning View attachment 70266

Trim/shave the bumper! Lol just kidding...You might be abe to squeeze 2-3 inches out of "aftermarket keys/shocks" Then you'll be close to your upper bumpstops (especially if your crank em all the way) so if you don't mind how it rides now then you won't mind later. Or do a body lift like jhoppy said.

Just be careful with cranking all the way, you'll put all the load in your torsion bars and the shocks won't be taking any of the bumps and doing the work through suspension travel. Hitting a big enough bumps hard enough would cause them to snap/break or what have you.

Again, just my $0.02, my experience with my setup and the words of an alignment guy with 30+ years.

ryansrado85, I have the 3 inch torsion key lift and 2 inch blocks in the back and it sits daggon near perfectly level

THIS! ^^^^

hey KOTABAD did you ever get wheel spacers?

02PONY, When I installed mine I just jacked the truck up on the frame and let the wheels suspension droop fully. Then just take the bolts all the way out it didnt give me any problems at all. I didnt have to use any special tools.

99dakotaman, No I dont have any wheel spacers but my rims do have a little bit of offset they are procomp 1079s
