Hey guys,

Lately (read "for awhile now"), I've noticed that it seems my trans shifts kind of hard. It only really happens noticeably under WOT. Whenever you floor it, it'll shift through all the gears fine, but it seems to slam into 2, 3, and Overdrive. I notice it more when it shifts into 2 and 3 though. It's enough of a jolt to make you lurch in your seat pretty good. Not really sure if this is normal, but it doesn't seem right to me.

It may not pertain to this issue, but my truck is SCT tuned and it now shifts around 5000 rpms under WOT. I noticed it before I got the tuner though, so I guess it doesn't really have anything to due with the hard shifting.

Any ideas? I'm thinking of replacing my fluid or just having it flushed completely.

Thanks

mine does that too, but its through all the gears. it aint bad. just make sure the fluid dont smell burnt or its discolored

make sure it has no funny noises when shifting either

No funny noises (that I can hear, anyway). The only strange noise is when shifting into reverse. It's kind of a clunk or I'm not sure how to describe it. It's not like a low clunk, it's higher in pitch and seems to be coming from the rear end.

If you loosen the valve body on 43-44-46 more will drain out
I do not know about later trans
anyone?
put a transgo shift kit in it
then you can call their tech line with questions
check the filters for unusual debris
if you have a spin on filter cut it open

It will not go bye bye. I change mine every 40xxx and still great from factory. it will be fine as long as its not blackened or has shavings in it

Yeah, the only concern of mine is I'm not sure how often, or if it has ever been done on my truck. I don't think it would be a good idea to just all of the sudden do a full tranny flush, but then again it might not hurt. It now has near 137,000 miles on it, and I only got it at 122,000. So I have no idea what kind of maintenance was done during the trucks first 122,000 miles.

the PO didnt tell you at all?

clunk is most likely play in the drivetrain=rear end
grab your drive shaft and twist it back and forth
there is always some play
check your u-joints
if you need replacements use only genuine dana-spicer
they are the only ones deep heat treated
all the others are flame hardened or electro coil heated- == thin and brittle surface
the ones with the zerks on the ends of the caps are stronger and easier to service
don't waste your money on a so called flush
there is really no way to flush the converter and oil cooler
if your fluid needs changing -change it
if you think it needs a flush- change it twice

Nope, it was traded in and I actually bought it from a Dodge dealer. It was priced REALLY cheap, otherwise I'd never buy a car/truck from a dealer. The salesman told me the PO was an auto detailer (probably just trying to get me to buy the truck), but who knows what the PO did. Judging by how much rust is on this truck, not a whole lot lol

Well hopefully he kept the fluids in great shape and regular maintence. as long as it doesnt show any signs of color or smell or shavings, your okay

Mine does the same thing when it shifts into second while slowly gaining speed...if Im accelerating fast then it doesnt do it. I got mine at the exact same miles as you did 122k changed the oil immediatley after I bought it and there was sludge in it ...nasty stuff, trans. fluid was fine though...sometimes hear a low whine coming from under the truck.

Yeah, I checked it today and there's no shavings, and I don't think it smells burnt. But it does maybe look a little dark. I'll have to check it again and take a picture.

Okay take a picture. And if the fluid hasnt been changed and then flushed for first time there goes trans. I work in a shop. Ive seen it happen before. Its hard to explain but it shouldnt happen if done right

I totally understand what you're saying. Just like I wouldn't all the sudden switch to full synthetic oil from conventional, or run a bunch of sea foam through a vehicle with high miles and knock all the carbon and deposits free and screw up the engine. I get what you're saying man lol

yea just have to know the signs and when to not to do it
