hey everyone! my name is Jake I am a Firefighter in the Air Force and am stationed in Alaska. I bought a 2000 Dodge Dakota 5.9L V/8 Quad cab about 2 years ago and it currently has 170,000 miles on it. It is having some troubles at this point. burning anti freeze and oil at a pretty quick rate and blowing white smoke from the exhaust. possibly a head gasket .. the tranny is also starting to have troubles shifting at highway speed.( I have to lay off the accelerator for it to shift)

I loved the Dakota so much that when I returned from overseas last month I bought my wife a 2000 4.7L V/8 SLT Durango with 80,000 miles and it is in great shape.

I'm wondering if you or anyone you know has been able to push these trucks past 200,000 miles without completely rebuilding or replacing the engine? I have a VERY limited mechanical back round aka (cant fix shit) . no where near the experience needed to tackle this head gasket job.

as far as the Durango is concerned I am interested in putting a little bit of work into it. possibly a lift kit and some all terrains .. not sure yet we will see. Anyway I am glad to have found other dakota-durango enthusiasts and will be sure to troll through the forums before asking other dumbass questions.. thank you!

Welcome! I have a 99 CC R/T that I am just about to turn 200K on with minor issues! It burns a little oil and I need to replace the thermostat gasket. As for the oil, it is due for a plenum gasket and valve cover gaskets and I think that will solve my issues! Check your belly pan and see if there is oil pooled up in there, you more than likely have the same issue as me. The 5.9's can go a very long time with proper maintenance! I have 198,xxx on my r/t and it still roast's tires with the greatest of ease!
