I am looking to replace my stock air box with a conical filter and new tubing. I am just debating if I should buy one off Ebay or just make one myself... I am looking at a couple now, but I am wondering if I should upgrade to a K&N filter. Also one is a dual filter but it seems like it may suck in more HOT air because it is over the engine... Thoughts?
 
A lot of people like to build them.

I thought about it when I put an intake on my '02 4.7, and of every picture of the home built intakes...they all looked like...a pile of PVC pipe. Plus, a good cone filter is $50, and buying all the plumbing, brackets, and assorted other stuff would likely be $50, totaling ~$100 for the intake.

While that works for some - I didn't care for the look. I purchased an aFe intake for ~$220, and was quite happy.

Your intake looks good with the heat shield and all of the proper plugins. I found them on Ebay for about $250+. I was looking to spend more around $150, though. I guess I found some generic ones on ebay for $35-$85 and was just thinking of adding a K&N filter... One I thought was kind of cool was the BOMZ dual twin intake. My question is, is the double filter any better? And wouldn't it suck in hot air being over the engine like they have it?

Total was a little under $100. Ebay intake that came with a K&N for around $80, $5 garbage can and $15ish for ceramic paint. It came chrome, I painted it with the ceramic paint because the chrome would get super hot. I found out that it didn't help much, if any, with intake temps. But it did keep the pipe about the same temp as outside air, vs too hot to touch when it was chrome. I did have to get rid of the (retardedly HUGE) cruise bracket to get it to work, just zip tied it down good. Not as good as what he posted, although I doubt there's much difference on a dyno, but I would put it up against the K&N setup as it's getting air from a much better spot.

Also, it has the right plug-ins for you. My truck has the sensor mounted on the intake manifold instead of the intake, that's why I don't have a sensor hooked where he does.

I think I saw your intake on another thread. It looks really good especially for the price. I think the one I am looking at on Ebay is the same one. I just need to find a K&N filter for it (I am sure they sell a kit with one too). I think I may just order that one today. The 2 filter BOMZ intake seems like it would suck in more hot air and then I would have 2 filters to deal with. Thanks for your input and pics!
 
Yup, all those are good for is hot air, and one of my friends blew his trucks engine with a 2 filter intake. That was mostly his fault for mudding with an intake like that, but still a poor design IMO.
