You can verify if its too long by checking the indicator marks on the tensioner itself. The indicator should be between the marks, it its not its either too tight or too lose.
hmm didn't see this reply till now .. wonder if thats the issue. i still have the damn squeak

My next door neighbor mechanic told me the cheap autozone belts will squeak right off the bat. You had a problem before this belt I assume? How old was previous belt? I picked up a gatorback on ebay for $19 shipped on ebay recently. Could be time for a new tensioner too.

yeah had the issue before the new belt.. and it went away at first then came back .. i am pretty sure the tensioner is newer too .. can't remember if it was this truck of the last one :jester:

Mine is making noises also. What I found out eventually is that the power steering pump was leaking fluid. At first I thought it was the hoses so I replaced those first but still leaked and squeaked. What is happening though is that the front seal of the pump is leaking which is causing fluid to get on the belt and causing a squeak. I took the belt off and cleaned it with some simple green and the squeak went away for a day and then came back. Not saying yours is having this problem but you might wanna check it out just in case. I have had two daks now and something with the pumps have went bad on both.

i got this stuff called "cling - Surface" belt preservative. it's hold as hell (my father had it on the farm for the silo blower) and it's made for V-belts, but i put it on my belt on my truck, and it made it STICK. sounded like really small velcro the first few days.
the can it's in is def not what it looks like today. this is a steel can with a steel spout.
stuff is so thick i had to leave it in hot water for an hour for it to come out quick (really too quick lol) it's black and tar like though.
found this through google and it looks about right:
http://beltsmart.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1602

if you do get it, my advice is to either use it only on the rib side of the belt, or if you do use it on the flat side too (for the water pump) brush it on.

EDIT.
just went and looked. the MFG is different on the one i linked. i looked at my can and it's made by the "cling-surface company, buffalo NY" (says it on both sides of the can. from a time when people took pride in their products) the one i linked is from ITW Dyson. google pulled up some records from 1900 to 1959 for the original company. IDK what happened to them in/after 59 though.

what was the normal stuff? spray silocone or whatever it is?
this stuff is like roofing tar thick. when i found it and put it on, my dad told me to be careful. one time the silo blower jammed and the belt didn't give, the pulley on the crank of the engine did. when i say it was sticky, it was like masking tape sticky 3 days later.
