Greetings and Salutations

I just acquired a '98 Dakota Sport Quad cab. Here is what I am planning on for a sound system. I'd like some thoughts of people that have these trucks about weather or not I am headed in the right direction...

  • After market HU ( Prefer DD nav, with heavy dash mods )
  • Focal 165 V3E front speakers in the doors, and custom kick panel
  • 8" Shallow mount subs in the rear 6.5 location
  • 2 Kenwood 2ch amps for the front speakers
  • Alpine MRP M1000 for the subs
  • Appropriate gauge power, ground and speaker wires
This was the system I was putting together for my Volvo S60 till I got the Dakota. The plan was to bi-amp the 3 ways with the two Kenwood amps. One to drive the 6.5" and the other to drive the 4/tweet through the corss overs. The HU was going to power my rear door speakers, and the Alpine MRP M1000 for the two Kickers. So far, I have the following:
  • Focal 165 V3E 6.5, 4, tweet
  • 2 Kicker Solo Classic 8" DVC 2 Ohm Subs
  • Kenwood KAC 7204 170X2 amp
  • Kenwood KAC 7205 170X2 amp
  • Alpine MRP M1000 amp
  • Pioneer AVIC D2 HU
  • Pioneer GEX-P910XMT XM Nav Traffic tuner
  • Pioneer 12 disc CD changer

I'm also considering a different HU...Dunno if I want to mod my dash or not. I'm just wondering what will be involved with putting a couple 8s in back. What is the opinion of the learned folk here?

Thanks in advance!

This is probably the route I am going to go. I was just hoping to retain the back seat.

What about modding the dash for a double Din HU? Any experience with that?

So, I found a great thread here detailing how a DD Nav system was fitted into a Gen 3, but it is the newer one with the vents on the side. Anyone done one like mine with the vents on top? I'm going to look for a dash bezel this weekend for a guinea pig. Don't want to have to go looking for one AFTER I brake mine LOL.

My goal is to install either my old AVIC D3, or if I can talk my better half into it, the new Z130 due out soon.

Looks like the plan for the speakers has changed as well. I'm going to build a box for the 2 Kicker Solo Classic 8" 2ohm DVC subs I have, and the Alpine MRP-M1000 amp and order a set of Kicker QS 65.2 components for the doors. I'm gonna save the Focals I have for my Volvo C70 'vert in the future. Power for the mids/tweets will be the Kenwood KAC-7205 amp, with a KAC-7204 for the rears. Haven't picked them out yet, but leaning toward the Kicker KS 65. I already have the XM Nav tuner, and a 12 disc CD changer. The HU is going to be almost completely up to my better half, as she is supposed to replace the AVIC Z2 that was stolen from my Volvo S60 after she drove it. We shall see...

I don't know squat about head units or amps, but i prefer superb quality sound rather then thumping or loud as hell. Want good sound, get some tweeters up front, midrange+ tweeters for the doors and club cab sides and some amplified 8" subs for the back (more then 8" is overkill) and you will be more then set. Unless you want to shake the earth or get everyones attention, spend and have at the stupid noise polution, btw, no one likes it! It's gay anyways, only guys will turn their heads to see it. You fruit loop!

I'm not sure what you are talking about here, but I am not looking for Boom, Boom  I am more of a thump kinda guy LOL That is the second reason I have two 8" subs. The first being, my Volvo had two 8s in the rear deck...

As for head units, That is my main question. Has anyone here put a Double Din in a 97-2K Dak? If so, do you have any pix of the progress, and the finished product? When I get to do it, I will try and chronicle the progress.

We just did a project where we had to sell cotton candy for our school.
now we hav to do some marketing proposal and my job is to make the critique of the plan. what's that].

Will definitely keep you in mind :)

Personally, I a hoping for a new Z series, but that may take a while. Have you done a DD in your Dak?

Got the tweeter grills today ( thanks again, 70Cuda383 ) and picked up the Focal 165 V30 speakers for a song :D I'm hoping to get into the truck tomorrow and get the new speakers installed. Hopefully I have enough time :)

nice choices of gear.the double din can be done with crazy amounts of work on the bezel and dash.since you want to retain your backseats,i'd go with an underseat box as well.

Update!

In the ever changing world that is my life, this is the current direction for my Dak audio:

  • Installed a new Pioneer MVH-P8200BT last week
  • Installed Focal 165V30 separates in the front doors in June
  • Installed an Alpine MRV-F540 amp bridged to run the Focal's also in June
  • Installed a kicker ZX400.1 powering the factory 6.5" speakers as make shift subs :D in July
  • Looking into an enclosure for the side panels, or biting the bullet with the under back seat sub box.

I have the dash bezel almost done for the DD install, but wanted Blue Tooth so I don't get pulled over here in Washington. I seem to attract a lot of attention I don't need from the cops already ;)

I might pull the rear side panels and measure to see if the Kicker 8's I have now will fit. If not, I might go with shallow 10s and glass it in. Not sure yet...

If you want a couple good 8" subs, I recommend these http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_21&products_id=785

$65 each is a hell of a deal for them, I paid $190 for two a couple years ago. Here they are is my QC Dakota

They're not as loud as the 10's or 12's everyone around here has bumpin in there ride, but the sound quality is great and they're superb for fast pace punchy double bass kicks in the rock/metal music I listen to.

Gonna look into those 8s next pay day :)

Here are a few pix of my DD progress. Maybe, if I'm lucky, I can talk my better half into an X930 ( or possibly the replacement X940 early next year ) to replace my MVH-P8200BT, since the 8200 won't controll my 12 disc CD changer :( Still got some filling left on the right side...it's drying now ;)
