I have a really odd coolant leak that I cannot figure out.

I first noticed a vary faint coolant smell, and when I took a look, found a few drips on the ground under the front of the engine. Coolant was dripping down the front of the block from somewhere. Last time this happened, it was the stupid heater core return line o-ring, so I RTV'd the crap out of it to make sure it was sealed. After doing this, I made sure the cooling system was still burped (it was), and added more coolant to the reservoir (to the top of the dots).

I drove it around and after a few days noticed the drips and smell again. When I looked under the hood, I can see where the coolant is dripping down the front of the oil pan, but can't find a single wet spot on the timing cover or water pump. I can also see where coolant has been flung by the belt onto the side of the battery.

The strangest part of it all is that if I put coolant in the overflow tank, it will be empty in a few days.....BUT the cooling system stays completely topped off...to the point that it actually overflowed some last time I popped the cap.

Has anyone encountered an odd leak like this before? I'm not really sure where to look next besides trying UV dye.

I should add that the water pump, T-stat and bypass hose are all brand new as of last fall, so I doubt those are leaking and/or bad.

Did you put sealent on the bolts for the water pump. I've seen a few that will leak after awhile. Some might go through the a water jacket. Just for shits and giggles take out the bolts and clean them then put indian head schelack on them and put em back.

i have.
it's probably the timing cover gasket.
when i blew my radiator up, it gave me a few other problems too.
one being the gasket on the passenger side of the timing cover failed to the outside. i figured it out when i pulled the whole bracket off it and found the week. when i played with it a bit it ended up spraying a couple inches just from gravity!
all i did was bars stopleak. i do not have the money or motivation to pull the timing cover just for the gasket.

im 75-80% sure that all the bolts are blind, and none of them open to water.

i would try re torquing them all first because what does happen is IIRC some of the bolts are longer and actually help clamp the timing cover to the block

unless he air ratcheted the long few ones threw the water jacket lol.

oh gods. i only use that shit on slow, and only to take shit apart after i hand break it. high speed bolt in an aluminum thread makes a nice aluminum spring wound around a bolt.

What I find odd is that is intermittent, and that it seems to leak the most with coolant in the overflow tank. Its almost like the overflow tank itself is leaking, but I've never seen any sign of a leak from it. It also will only leak after its been running, and will stop once the truck has sat a little while.

I'm going to retorque the bolts today and see if I can find anything else. Does anyone know the torque spec for the bolts? Also, I heard once that all coolants will glow under UV, so I should be able to just grab a blacklight and start hunting. Is that true?

where the leak is, while it's leaking it's drawing fluid from the tank.
when i cleaned mine out i WATCHED the level in the tank go down.
and mine started as only when hot. the block is cast iron and the cover is aluminum iirc. once they bolth cool it will seal again.pull the acc bracket and run your finger around the seam. i bet it's wet
