Hey guys,
I'm looking for information on transmission work. My 2nd gear recently went out, and I've been quoted an estimate (of course, being the tranny, it's ballpark) of roughly $2k for the rebuild. I was just curious if anyone has had tranny problems and what kinda costs they incurrred. Im in a 2000 Dakota R/T with 87,xxx miles. Thanks for any help.

Price varies.....I own a shop and pay somewhere between 1700-2200 depending on trans....I do usuall markup when i sale.....Im sayin your around the 2200 range.....The beautiful part is it doesnt matter who installed tranny its under warranty through the dealer for 3yr 36000 miles...Have a prob with it take it to them.....Not my prob or yours...Its all them.... :usa2:

Did it just go, or did it start slipping first? Second gear uses the front band to apply, it you lost second, I would drop the pan to be sure the linkage did not fall off. Actually, try to adjust the band, it is easy to do, and you don't have to drop the pan. If you keep spinning it in, the linkage fell out. It could be a afternoon fix that only costs a oil change and some time under the truck.

Based on the replies, I'm guessing it would be a better option to go with a new (remanufactured) transmission as opposed to rebuilding the current one? Well, i've been to Aamco, and Cottman, and they both gave me the $2000 estimate based simply on a 3 minute drive (no trouble codes present). My next stop is the dealership (usually they're the highest, so i saved it for last).
I know transmission problems are costly, but I've never actually dealt with one before and I dont wanna get ripped too bad.

SmokinCummins- No slipping whatsoever - It was running fine on my drive to work, and upon leaving...it just didnt want to get out of first (until about 3200 rpm)

Thanks guys

That is why I hate tranny shops. They are giving you an estimate on an overhaul, which you probably do not need. A 3 minute test drive is not a test at all, it simply verifys that it is working right, or not. A proper test is to do a pressure test of the different circuits. Your problem could probably be fixed with a valve body replacement, or even repair. Tranny shops know that most customers don't have a clue about tannys, and they take advantage of that. Sorry for the rant, good luck.

From this statement, I would guess the tanny is strong. The "gears" are simply planetaries that are applied by different clutches. A tranny that needs an OH will be slipping in a certain gear, then get weaker and weaker. If you all of the sudder lost 2nd, that tells me that second is still strong, it is for some reason not getting hydraulic pressure to apply it. In second there are two clutches applied, the forward clutch, and second band. The forward clutch is applied in all forward gears. You can rule it out since it is working in all other gears. The band is pressurized by the front servo which is servicable without removing the tranny from the truck. A good mechanic would have hooked up gauges on the tranny to see pressure before giving an estimate of repairs.

IMO at 80.000 miles you need to be lookin at a reman dodge unit......The motto here is pay me now or pay me twice later.....Dont waste alot of time with going inside and doing any type of seriouse repair to just bandaid it....Its a dodge tranny deal with it now and get it overwith.... :usa2:

JFYI You might checkout Jasper reman....My rep came in the other day they offer the same warranty and said they have corrected dodges engineering issues....

double check any and all vacuum lines on it. gm th350's have a vacuum modulator that i had the line come off and it wouldnt shift until close to 4500 rpm. if all that looks good i would follow what smokin cummins said with adjusting the band and inspecting the fluid, filter and pan for debris and metal shavings. if the fluid looks good then i think that your trans doesnt need rebuilt unless you plan on upgrading
