my dads truck (99 318 5spd 4x4) literally took a shit today. Today, while driving to work, he told me the truck stalled at least 10 or 15 times (same with driving back home.) It would only stall when he pulls up to a stop sign or light(did stall twice on freeway when he took foot off gas). It would stall, and he would start it up with no problem. Any ideas? im thinking computer or one of the many sensors. Check engine and brake light came on.

thanks

dave

maybe try and git a code from the check engine light and maybe we can figure it out

check to see if there is any air in the fuel rail, take the plastic cap off and press down on the bleeder valve, (drivers side of the engine, looks just like a tire air valve) don't press down on it too hard, just enough to see if any fuel comes out, but if you can hear any air coming out first.. you have a leak somewhere that is allowing air to get into the fuel lines, and since air isn't combustible, it would explain the random engine dying.

hey dave check out my post from a bit ago. Downshift and she DIES!!
I have what sounds like almost the same problem. AND i have the exact truck as your dads (99 318 5spd 4X4) I'm not sure if its all the same symptoms or not, not sure if it happens to your dad when he downshifts, thats what seems to trigger mine.

i haven't been able to get it fixed yet, i'm still deployed, but in 2 weeks i get leave and i'm gonna take a crack at it. Thought this might add a little additional insight. Keep us updated

i just re-read your post. Does your dad have the truck in gear while slowing down? cause mine does it then too (i know how to drive stick, i'm not comming to a stop without pushing the clutch or taking it outta gear. It stalls out LONG before i should need to hit the clutch/put it in N)

I just can't help but think we are workin the same issue.

Make sure there is not bad carbon buildup on the throttle blades. When buildup gets bad enough, it will choke off the air at idle.

Fix by spraying throttle body cleaner into the throttle body (engine off)while scrubbing the bore with your mother in laws tooth brush. Use small shots, as too much will make it hard to start - kind of like flooding it. You can also spray it in while the engine is running, but this is not as effective. Once you get it clean, you may want to follow by spraying the can in while the engine is running to clean the passages.
