There's videos on youtube about the procedure, but you basically want to pop the cover off, let the oil drain out.. Clean the old RTV off the differential and cover, then use some brake parts cleaner to really clean up in there. Inspect for damaged gears or metal shavings. Apply the RTV around the differential and then line up the cover on it. Tighten a little bit, and then let it sit for half hour. Then give it another quarter turn and give it another 2 hours or so. It should be sealed, so you can now pour your oil in the differential through the fill plug.

I used 75w-140 oil on my rear, I'm not sure of the front.

It's kinda like silicone, it's a gasket maker.. and make sure to circle the bolts with it otherwise it'll leak through the threads

i've got the 9.25 rear and it took about 2.25 quarts with the lsd additive. right below the fill plug.

while you got the cover off paint it'll look sweet.

Same thing. Remove cover, let drain, replace cover with sealing agent (silicone is best IMO) and refill.

That said, just because the axles were under water/mud doesn't mean they need changed. The vents are located higher. Pop the level plugs and check the fluid. As long as it isn't milky looking, you're fine.

Further still, if you've never changed the fluid and/or don't know when it was done last. Do it.

thanks man, im still going to change it b/c we have never done it with the 8 years we have had it.

My rear diff cover had been off before and whoever resealed it musta used cause I couldn't get that sucker to budge. Didn't want to damage the cover either and worry 'bout trying to find another one as I was doing the job on a Sunday and needed the truck.

So.. I bought this:

http://www.amazon.com/Topside-Oil-Changer/dp/B0000BYMBC

They carry the same model at norther tool; that's where I got mine.

I know ideally you want to get the cover off to clean the magnet, but mine was a major PITA. The front diff looks to be a pain, too.

So I'm just gonna vac it out every 15k miles. I'm sure most metal shavings not on the magnet are in suspension if you do the vac after driving when the fluid is warm. Plus, my main goal was getting fresh lube in there. You shoulda seen the front. What came out of there looked just like a chocolate milkshake.

I used SuperTech 75w-90. Don't forget to add friction modifier if u have a LSD.
