so if the clutch fan is not needed, why is there one on the 4.7's? just incase the e-fan fucks up? and if it doesnt give any more fuel mileage, whats the point in getting rid of it? im sure it must bring down power and fuel efficiency. it never really disengages.
Its to provide additional cooling power, A) for when towing B) If the electric fan gives out. You do see very slight improvements when taking it off. I noticed a pick up when accelerating. Also the engine is a lot more quiet. Sometimes when I would start my car it would sound like a broken down tank because of the clutch fan.

It does help cool, the E-fan is incase the clutch fan fucks up. It should help some with MPG's and power but not a whole lot. But, it's free horsepower so it really doesn't matter how big or small it is lol. And you guys are putting to much effort into making a tool to hold it in place, I just put 2 bolts in the pulley, put a pry bar inbetween them and used a big crescent wrench for the nut. To be honest I didn't really feel much but it's nice not having to listen to the fan when you get on it.
Yes it does help cool. I noticed that with the clutch fan, the car sat about in the middle when it comes to the temp gauge. When I took the clutch fan off, the temp went to the other side past the middle. I felt very uncomfortable so I changed the thermostat from a 195 to a 180. Now the car cools even better and actually sits in the middle of cold and middle of the temp gauge.

I tried just the bolts, but my nut was jammed, which happens to most I guess that we have to make that tool. Its not like it cost a lot to make, also took 5 minutes to build.

Yes the quiet is awesome!

No noise is the biggest benefit. I never had any colling issues with just the stock fan. After installing a Grand Cherokee fan the A/C feels a lot cooler though.
I was thinking of changing out my fan too, but the stock is working perfectly.

so you say, it has serious impact on AC temp?
I didnt notice any change in my AC, seems exactly the same to me. Only benefit is pick up when accelrating and noise reduction.

OK, so will it still be tolerable in hot weather or not? I am just thinking to remove it or not. Currently for me it is just making noise there..

Can shorter belt be installed with removing clutch fan?
I live in Miami FL.... Changing the thermostat gave me better cooling then with the clutch fan installed, as mentioned above.

No unless you don't want a water pump lol, you take the fan off the water pump pulley. Will not make a difference on A.C. temps, but if you live somewhere that it is hot a lot it might not be the best mod. If you are real worried about it take it out and swap in a bigger electric fan. And you can always try it out and throw it back on, doesn't take much to get it off and is real easy to get back on. Just remember that the electric fan won't kick on til 212deg or if the AC is on. So if you are sitting in stop and go traffic leave the AC on.
Yea it attached to the water pump.... infact that is another benefit, you take stress off the water pump pulley, that is most likely where the extra pickup comes from.

Yes, the e-fan will not kick on unless you have the AC on. If you buy the SCT reprogrammer though, you can reprogram the fan to come on at a differet temp, or just turn on when the engine is on, that way you dont have to run the AC too.

It doesn't get much hotter than Miami Fl. I drove for over a year and even towed with just the puny stock electric fan and never overheated I upgraded because I now tow farther. It DOES make the A/C cooler, especially in 90* weather
I also live in Miami and have had this mod for a year. OMG, you tow!!!!! I do not tow. So where does your gauge sit at when towing? I do not notice the AC change, except maybe the back. I noticed the rear unit cools super fast, but the front is the same as before the mod. Maybe I need to upgrade the e-fan?

The upgraded electric fan made the A/C cooler, not removing the clutch fan. I never noticed my temps getting hot with the stock electric sans clutch fan, even when towing 5,000lbs plus. I wasn't towing far or at highway speeds though. Once I started towing farther I upgraded to the Grand Cherokee fan just for added peace of mind. I just flushed the cooling and added 180* thermostat, now it stays below the halfway mark.

I re-installed my clutch fan when the outside temp got around 90. Sitting in traffic for a long time I noticed the AC was not cooling as good with the clutch fan. I will leave it on until this fall then take it back off. I do notice a slight MPG inprovement without the clutch fan. Later on I might install a big electric fan to help the AC on these hot days.

Maybe it's just because you guys have bigger rigs that you notice it, it only takes a little bit to get my RC cold even when sitting in traffic on a hot day.

A little tip for those of you that cant get your clutch fan off....take a long chisel and a hammer and give the nut a couple sharp blows towards the passenger fender. Your fan will spin right off. This works with any clutch fan as long as you go in the correct direction

Same principle as those that have access to an air hammer....Tap that sucker with an air hammer/chisel and it will spin right off.

what year grand cherokee fan and where do u find a 180* thermostat?

No, the pulley is pressed onto the water pump shaft so even with the fan removed it can't go anywhere, no need to put anything on it. Mine has been off since I got the truck in 04, I put a 180* t-stat in in 06 I think it was, even towing long distances in the middle of the summer in 90*+ temps my truck has never even thought about overheating.

hate to bring this up, but the other day I was playing around with my truck, and I watched the efan. I turned the AC on and nothing happened. Turned it on full blast too and nothing. Also turned the vent on and that didnt turn it on either. So what gives. I want to take the fan off sometime this week, but if the fan doesnt turn on then Im not going to mess with it until I tap into my fan wires and turn it on manuelly. Its an 01 4.7

I think there's a fuse/relay for it, check that, or your fan might have died. It should be turning on with the AC on, but I don't think it stays on all the time with the AC on. Either way, if the AC was on for a while and the fan never kicked on something isn't right.

I had the truck running for a little bit, I know the motor wasnt warmed up yet. Im just wondering if that had something to do with it. Ill check all fuses and relays with it. Im also going to search around for a fan as well.

Well let it warm up before you go diving into things haha.

If it's cold outside as in down in the 50's and colder, that's normal. Not sure why, but only if it gets warm outside the efan will kick on every time the a/c pump cycles on/off. When it's cold outside the only time the fan will run is when operating temps get well over 200 degrees, 210* IIRC.

Another Idea

Just used this idea this weekend. Worked great. Mine was really stuck on there.

I used a Coat Hanger....put coat hanger through the open holes on the water pump pulley and then looped it and twisted it...to secure it....the other end I did the same thing through an open hole on the fender well// 2 Taps with a BFH and it came off.
having the coat hanger on there holding the pulley also made it easy to spin the Nut off. Good Luck all...
