year isn't so important as to what size rear it is, either 8.25 or 9.25". you can use any rear of the same size out of a dak or durango. only differences are how the leafs are mounted, over or under which you can change, and 03+ have rear disc brakes. you should also look for one with at least 3.92 gear ratio to help you out some.

I wanna say the rear end in my truck is a 8.25. How can i tell for sure? What gears do you think i have and hows the 3.92s going to help me out? Thanks a lot btw. Im pretty much clueless lol

the easiest way is to open the glovebox and look at the sticker, it will tell you what it is. otherwise count the number of bolts on the diff cover. the 9.25 is a stop sign shape and had 12 bolts. an 8.25 is more rounded and has 10 bolts.

lower gears will increase your power transfer and balance out the rpm range. it gives you the feeling of more low end power and better midrange feel. stock gears are 3.55's and worthless. you will actually increase mpg with lower gears because you take some of the load and strain off the engine/tranny since it doesn't have to work as hard. there is a ton of info on here though about gears and you can search around for that and decide if it's what you want.

imho, it is the best mod anyone can do for the truck though.

also i forgot to mention watch out for the DS flange on the diff, some have a different connection. if you find an older rear it could have a different flange and not bolt up to your DS.

say you did get the wrong rear (as i did) how can you go about swapping it anyhow? i have a 97 dak with the strap type 8.25 and am swapping a 9.25 00 durango rear and it has the flange type.

I been trying to research but havent got a solid answer yet. I had read somewhere that you could get an "adapter" u-joint. any ideas?

Have to get the flange connector off the donor driveshaft if it fits or change out the flange for the older U joint type. It unbolts so should be fairly straightforward.

Is that part the same on the 8.25 and the 9.25?
