Just got them in the mail... Their is a installation warning that say that they highly recommend to soak the rocker over night in ''Break-in oil '' that contains Zinc, and the use of zinc break in oil or a high quality zinc additive for the first 500-1000 miles.
Is regular oil contains zinc or do I have to bye a specific oil ?
I run my engin with synthetic oil. Do I have to change to put regular oil or the add of a zinc additive will be ok ? Thanks

is castrol 5w30 is ok to soak the rocker before installation ? Is their Zinc in that oil ?

I just soaked mine in a quart of some cheap NAPA oil we had lying around my shop. Then use whatever oil you want in the engine.

:thankyou: :mullet:

Zinc is a rust inhibitor, that have anything to do with it? Probably not, seems like oil would be enough.

Got mine yesterday.......

bought them from Summit. Read the same thing and did a little Google research. Lucas oil sells an additive thru Advance Auto down here for about $14. Link is attached. There is a LOT of discussion about the use of zinc additives for use with flat tappit cam followers.

I like the way they print it in red at the top of the warranty slip and bold the "*****FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY CAUSE PREMATURE WEAR THAT IS NOT COVERED BY OUR WARRANTY********* LMAO their lawyer must have written that up so they never have to warrant anything again.

Next I'm trying to get my FMS 4 hole injectors.... :woot: ....

i let mine sit over night in 10w-30 amsoil, since its what ive been running in my engine for over a year. dont be suprised if shes a bitch to fire up. my3.9 would just crank on the first try unless i gave it some throttle and feathered the pedal otherwise it would die.. took me 5 starts for her to idle on her own, had to learn the new air and exhaust flow characteristics. so far 80 miles on them and running smooth, make sure you use blue thread locker on the rocker bolts, this way they dont back out on ya for any reason, taking the valve covers back off is a chore, blowing the motor is worse.

total rethink on the Lucas zinc...and zinc in general

Stopped at Advance Auto to buy the Lucas zinc break in additive and it has a big warning that the zinc will screw my catalitic convertor. Six Pak nailed it in his reply. Good thing I read this stuff before I buy and try. Fox I'm thinking your right about the soak overnight in motor oil and put it in. I'm a Castrol Syntec guy.

Fox, did you disconnect the battery and let the computer reset before you started it? I haven't read if that helps but I was going to do it and hope for the best.
:clap2: Thread locker blue is my favorite, forget Master Card, Permatex is always in my garage. Thanks for the tip...!

I just went and did the same install. I was worried about my lifetime warrenty. So I went and bought Lucas break-in oil with Zinc. It was 12 bucks. I soaked them for the 24 hours as stated. I have this unfounded reasoning in my head. That Harland Sharp will test the rockers if broken. And find out that it was not soaked as recommended. Kinda like CSI on a rocker arm. :p

Since I put the Rockers on I'm now taking my Mopar PCM and putting it back in. I will let you guys know if it makes any diffrence.

it says to soak for 1/2 hour before you install them. i let them soak overnight, give more time for the oil to compltely seep in.

yeah i had to disconnect the battery a few times, since the one valve cover bolt on the passenger side was right under the positive feed off the alternator, and my extension off the 7/16 was touching it. so far i probably have over 200 miles on them (i drive more than you can imagine) and all is quite and well, so im not worried about premature failure. im keeping my rpms as low as possible, no more than 2500. this way they can break in nice and smooth. a little extra precautionary but after how much i spent all together including my time installing them, il baby it for the first 1000 miles. yeah its overkill.

make sure you hold those spacers firmly against the rockers when you put each set on with the allen socket quick to follow to thread them on. dont need them dropping into the block. watch your push rods that they seat into the rockers otherwise you can damage them or the rockers.

Fox, glad your talkin'....

I opened the blister pack up and after reading the detailed installation guide :jester: I came to the conclusion that you need at least 12 fingers to install these things. Oh boy :banana2: I'm thinkin I might try wheel bearing grease to hold it together during the install. Wouldn't be the first time I've done it.

As to the oil soak I think they install the bearings dry and there is no pressure feed to them like the bad old days of rocker shafts, so if we install them with out a good long soak the needles won't get oil for a long long time, if ever.

Damn, I want to do this job NOW but I still have other s%@t to get done. I still have injectors to sort out and buy and I'm probably going to replace my valve guide seals. This engine has always used oil, I did the Hughes plenum cover long ago when the gasket failed. Seals are easier to get to than rings....and I only have 70K on the engine.

Thanks again Fox...!!!

With the mopar PCM im getting a lope at idle now as I was not before. Not sure if thats cause the PCM is re-learning my truck. But I also have better quicker revs. I need to take it for a spin to see if it made any off the line improvements. I can say before I installed the Mopar PCM I was able to smoke a second gear again. In the past few months it has lost that ability. But with the rr's its back. Now to test it with the mopar pcm. I may have lost the ability due to putting the factory exhaust back on. But its back and Im a happy camper.

Pics of installation

Just finish the installation . Everything went well. A bit tricky on driver side because of all wires and pipes. Run smooth at start like everyday start. Went for a run . Did not notice a significative improvement. Will see if it will change when pcm lern. Hope it will ..... to justify the $500 investment !! :D
