Hey guys, im chasing down a vibration in my Ram. I originally thought the tires needed to be balanced, but then I switched over to the 20's recently and had them balanced and its still there. Not bad, just enough to piss ya off. It only occurs at 52-60 mph. I did yank on the drive shafts quickly, they seemed ok. But didnt have much time tonight so I will check them again. I do feel it more in the wheel as per seat, but Im not sure now.

Anything else I could check?

wheel bearings. what happens if you put on the brakes slightly when you get the "shakes"? Are you taking the tires/rims to the same place that balanced the last set of tires/rims? try another place.

when you get the "shakes" what happens if you let of the accelerator a little?
wheck the wheel bearings by jacking up the vehicle and rocking the tire. rotate and see if it is smooth. let us know what you find out.

Do you still have your stock wheels/tires? Might be a pain but swap back to those and go for a test drive, if the vibration is gone then you know its with the new wheel and tires and nothing else.

Like the above guys said, check the wheel bearings. If they're bad you'll hear it as the wheel is spinning. Is there sort of a humming sound (it will sound like you have a giant mud tire rolling next to your truck) as your driving at those speeds? Wheel bearings will make that noise if they're bad.

Constant at 55...... if I leave off gas, still does it. If i give it gas still does it. Smooth until 52 mphs, then smooths out again at 62-65. I didnt try putting the brakes on at that speed, i will though. Im headed out now to start looking again. :worky:

take it out of OD to rule out the tranny?
did that too...still vibrates. I also through it in neutral at 55, still vibrates.

I mean, dont get me wrong, the steering wheel is not shaking violently, but you can certainly feel it, and you will stir your coffee if its in the holder. Just enough to piss you off.

I put it nuetral...check the rear drive shaft, no play..... joints seem tight. The front drive shaft still has the rubber protector around it and seem tight as well.

Did what WRC1045 said, put each wheel up in the front, and rocked top to bottom and side to side...no play, each wheel tight. Keep in mind the truck has 49 k on it.

Tomorrow I will get the tires rotated and re-balanced at a different shop. see what happens.

If that dont work I will just have to drive 62 +

what kind of tire, I think you might have one with a separated tread.

I was jusrt wondering. Do you have a friend with rims/tires that will fit your vehicle? I have replaced tires before and still had similar issues. I went with another brand or another shop the issues went away. It was tires for me several times and different vehicles, even with new tires. Not saying that's your issue but worth a shot.....

I think that should rule out wheel bearings... up in the air and no humming. not sure but are you a 4x4 or AWD? not sure about RTs.

my dads 07 ram had the same exact problem and it was just shitty tires...

could be the brakes i guess. if ur feeling it in the wheel more then the seat the problem lies up front. is it 2wd or 4wd?

watch out for tires.

the neighbor put some "new" tires on his camery and they were 7 years old and have never been mounted. The vibrated and shook because they had sat so long they were out of round.

check the expiration date on the tire :stirthepo

seriously though there is a manufacture date on the tires, if they are more than 18months old take them back

Pull drive shaft out and see if u-joints are tight...just because you "yanked" on drive shaft, does not mean you "checked" the joints

Jack up rear of truck...run engine in 1st gear...see if drive shaft moves up & down at all...that is another check

Ok...had it to another shop today...re-balanced tires third time. They are eliminated.

Tires...eliminated
Rims...eliminated
CV axles...appear tight, good shape with all boots.
Wheel Bearings tight... Eliminated
U-joints tight...but still could be locking up?
Front drive shaft, boot still on, seem tight..
outer tie rods ....eliminated
inner left tie rod, has slight play. Would not cause this type of vibration we think. That should have been replaced with the new rack that was just recently put on. Thats getting fixed Tuesday.

I do have a powertarin warranty so its going back to where I bought it on Tuesday.

My shop guys are telling me that they think it could be the following.

Drive Shaft out of balance? Lost weight
Transmission Lock up?? Never heard of this before.
Possible u-joints they are tight though but could be locking up...didnt want them to replace because of my warranty. They said they can actually be too tight? never heard of this either?

ok...Tonight driving to work the vibration seems worse, and I heard a loud squeal when i took off from stop sign. What ever it is is starting to fail. I hope it does already.
