I'm just numb right about now. In the fixing of the Durango, I was just betrayed by a good friend and screwed in the process.

Estimates from body shops and from the insurance put painting and fixing the hood, fender, front bumper, grill, and core (lower radiator) support at around $2000. Insurance check was sent to my buddy who does body work, he refunded me the remainder to put toward my parts and the frame work done by another shop, etc. Well I didn't need the grill or core support painted, so subtract that from the $2000. While he was at it I had him paint a rear bumper cover also since mine had some dings.

Well after the fact he says it was a pain in the ass to refinish the used parts I gave him, even though the original estimate called for "RECYCLED PARTS". So he sends me a bill for the total work and it is $3200!!! Around $200 for the rear bumper cover, and $3000 for LESS OF A JOB than I was quoted $2000 for.

To top it off, the paint looks like shit, the entire thing is orange peel. Plus he got some dust in the clear on the hood, so I have to wet-sand and buff it out this summer when it gets nice (no garage). He also ruined my towing hitch-plug (a custom $35 one) when putting it onto his trailer. It took him 3 weeks to do the work, and I had to drive over 200 miles to pick it up.

This guy has been a good friend of ours for several years. Stood by us through all the bullshit lawsuit we had going on, etc. Also stood by his side when he was accused of theft from the school booster club. His wife did daycare for us, our kids are good friends, etc. I just wanted to give him a bit of work since I know they didn't have a good year on the farm last year.

But I could have taken the Durango 5 blocks from my current house, had it back in 5 days, and paid less than $2000 for a beautiful job on the paint.

DAMN!!!!! With a friend like that you don't need enemies. So sorry to hear that a friend would do such a thing to you. Have you considered taking him to court to get this resolved?

Call your insurance company back and tell them he did not do the work correctly. This is the exact reason I dont go to friends for an sort of buddy deals. 99% of the time someone gets screwed.

I agree completely with you. However, I wasn't looking for a "buddy deal". I didn't need it done dirt cheap, just needed it done fair. I've told him that. I'm willing to pay a fair price, even to pay nearly the same price as a big shop. I just wanted to help the guy out with their finances is the main thing, without obviously just giving him money.

Also I'm not sure what the insurance company would say, because they try their best to get you to take it to one of their preferred shops, even though the law says you can take it to anyone. Right on the insurance estimate it says that I pay "full cost of repairs" because that is only an estimate.

Grrrr. I'm mostly settled down now, but still pretty hurt and pissed. Just not shaking anymore. He wants me to call him. Don't think I can do that yet without saying something we'll both regret.

I got a buddy doing my truck over. Fuckin sucks ass. He is SLOW AS SHIT. Cant complain about the quality of his work, and the price is great, so what do I say?

His big problem is he overextends himself. I understand my truck is a more long term project for him, so its not uncommon for him to get a car in for the weekend to do some quick work on for the quick cash. Thats no problem, I am not an asshole, but it seems more weekends then not he is working on something else, and most of those little weekend projects get complicated and take til Tuesday/Wednesday to finish.

I know he is giving me a GREAT price so I wont complain to hard, I just complain that my tires are going to have flat spots. When I get the truck back I don't think I am going to give him any more big projects, little shit like respraying a hard tonno maybe, but no lengthy projects.

CALL HIM HELL!!!!!!! When I talked to that bastard, I'd be about 2" away looking him right in the face!!! Some things a just better handled in person. You have a lot better chance of making your point!

Did he agree to do the job for the 2k?
I would suck it up and pay the additional $200 since it was not part of the estimate and tell him he should have had the additional work approved by the insurance co. they are the ones footing the bill. Then tell him to get fucked, who needs friends like that.
BTW, get an estimate to repair the shoddy work and send it to him if he hounds you.

wow. just wow. Hope that gets resolved without any hard feelings.
When you give a man a price on something, regardless of what it is, you be a man of your word and stick to your price! Whether it's a friend or a stranger, a man that don't keep his word is not worth the powder it'd take to blow his damn brains out!!!!!

It may be different in Montana, but where I come from your word is your bond!

Yes I totally agree, if there was to be a cost over run you need to pick up the phone and get approval. period.

Again with the whole 200 mile drive thing. lol

Exactly my point. Just not sure how to make that happen which is why my brain was working overtime last night and I didn't sleep, and why I'm not real excited about calling and talking to him. Shot off an e-mail earlier, kept it as peaceful as possible. Apparently he didn't notice that the insurance estimate was based on a used bumper. If he had known that, he would have called and bitched to them that they didn't allow enough time to refinish it. Anyway. I'll think on it a while.

i do body work and the insurance companies we work with give a detailed list of what they are paying for every time when they send the check to us and they only put on for used parts if that is what the body shop says they will use so it isn't the insurance companies fault they alloted for used parts and they only allow for 42 an hr and they go by what there estimate boooks call for on prep plus r&r and we work with so many and we still can come under or right at what they estimate
