I have a 2000 Durango that has had an ongoing starting problem for the last few months. Sometimes it starts right up, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't start right up, the starter engages the flywheel and it clicks once and then does nothing. When it does that, I just turn the key multiple times until it starts.

At first I thought the battery might be going bad, but it tested OK at Autozone. At that point I was thinking maybe the starter was going bad.

The new thing that happened really has me puzzled: the other day I turned the key, the starter cranked but then acted like it was losing power and then got it back again. It didn't start and then the car lost all electrical. No clock, no headlights, no dash lights, no radio, no nothing.

So, here's my train of thought at that point:
Did the battery just die? Batteries don't die all at once, so NO.
Is the ignition switch bad? The headlights won't even turn on and those should even without the key in the ignition, so NO.
Did some fuse blow somewhere? No headlights, so NO.
Is the PCM bad? F@#k, I hope not.

I went back in the house and started searching like a mofo on this forum and read a few threads about bad ground connections, so I thought that could possible be the problem. I went out and messed with/tightened all of the grounds I could find and voila, it started right up.

The only problem is that by the next day the no-start was back so I think my f-ing around with the grounds was coincidental.

What does this sound like to you?

solinoid maybe? and if your PCM went bad you'd still have headlights and all that good stuff, would still crank but just wouldnt start......no clue good luck maybe someone else will chime in

my R/T kinda does the same thing.... i did redo a couple grounds and it kinda fixed it.

newer cars like LOTs of ground points for some reason.

I have the same problem with my durango but I know what mine is its the wire that comes off the positive post of the battery and goes directly to the starter it is frayed where it makes contact with the battery clamp and sometimes the vibrations will make only the starter get power or it be underpowered

Here's a new piece of the puzzle:

When it starts, if the hood is up, there is a big puff of white smoke that goes away after 3-5 seconds. There's a nice burning smell that goes along with it. The smoke comes from somewhere on the back of the engine, near the firewall.

I now notice the smell every time she starts, but the smoke is only visible if the hood is up.

You replaced the positive wire from the battery to the starter already? Double check and make sure it is tight at both ends - check the starter connecton to make sure that the solenoid on the starter isn't screwed - I've seen a couple that have broke loose.

OK - I've got it all figured out:

I was looking at the starter through the driver's side fender well and noticed that there is an oil leak that goes right down onto the starter.

Starter + oil = click, click, click, smoke.

Where do these 4.7L's tend to leak oil? Valve cover gasket? I can't see the source because the heat shield is in the way.
