In 94 the speedo changed and was ran off the vehicle speed sensor. Prior to 94 they were mechanical. A 727 trans was not factory in 94. I don't believe the 727 has ability to run a electrical speedo. Hope this helps.

I got to thinking more on this. Appearance wise the 91-93 mechanical speedometer cluster is identical to the 94-96 electronic cluster. I would think if you found a cluster for a 91-93 and swapped it into your 94 you could run a cable and have it work. As far as I know only the speedometer was different between the clusters. All other gauges and dummy lights stayed the same. Just a thought.

Why couldn't you use the later electronic speedo housing? I haven't visually seen any differences in diameter between the two. They are different, gear and housing lengths, but not in anyway to deter installation.

Not sure if this has been solved yet, but the speedo housing that holds the gear is interchangeable between 727's and the OD trannies. I got a 5.2 and trans from a '94 B250 van for my duster that had a factory 727 running and electronic speed sender.

You are getting the problem kinda backwards.

I have a speedo that uses input from a speed sensor. NOT a speedo that uses a cable with a tranny that had a speed sensor.

Not backwards, just a poor explination.

The 727 was in the van with a factory VSS running an electronic gauge. When i transferred it into my duster i pulled the sensor and replaced it with a cable driven gear.
The only difference between the electric sender and the mechanical one is the shaft length of the gear they use. Both use the same gear in the transmission, but the one for the electric sensor has a longer shaft.

i have a 727 swaped in my 94 dakota. the speed sensor will bolt right up to the trans and work fine as long as you have the right gear for the sensor for your rear end gearing. you can buy just the speed gear to swap out. my truck came with 3.55 and i now have 4.56 so my speedo is way off but works just used a gps to get the right speeds.

on your trans im guessing it has nothing for a speedo so on the driver side of the trans there sould be a freeze plug looking plug that has to be pulled out. i used a punch then took a sheetmetal screw threaded it half way in and grab a channel lock and pulled on it untill it came out. if you want tomorrow or this week end i can take a pic of the plug that plugs in to the sensor also ill note what the colors are.

your stock speedometer yes i have mine hooked up in my truck the only problem is i changed my rear end gears to 4.56 and i haven't changed the speed sensor gear so my speedometer is off but works, i just have to get the ambition to buy a different gear and install it on the speed sensor.

i will get pics, I'm off to work right now.

oh i dont know if it is going to work then i thought you still had the pcm. you might not need it but i dont know for sure. i have some wiring diagrams i can send you if you give me your email.

here is the sensor in the trans.

this is the one for the torque converter lock up but you dont need it like me and it just hangs out.

Oh ok...I get it now...I have to see if that will work without the pcm..
Your best bet if you don't have the pcm.
Is to get a cluster for 91-93 and speedo cable
problem solved.
Thats what me and a buddy of mine did for his 95 with 727 trans.

I don't think it will work without the pcm. Hope this helps you.
